Archaeologists unearth Tuscaloosa's early history

June 26, 2013 ? University of Alabama archaeologists are getting a glimpse of what life in Tuscaloosa might have been like more than 180 years ago. From bottles and porcelain pieces to soil and flotation samples taken from privies, or outhouses, the analysts are discovering many "stories" of Tuscaloosa's past.

For the past two months, UA's Office of Archaeological Research has been analyzing artifacts found at the former City Fest lot, located on the corner of University Boulevard and Greensboro Avenue. The University was contracted by the City of Tuscaloosa to perform an archaeological investigation per federal guidelines in preparation for construction of a new Embassy Suites hotel.

Beginning in January, project director Brandon Thompson and his team began investigating the "Bank of the State site." In February, they stripped the remaining parking lot and exposed some "incredible" features, including many foundation remains from buildings that date back to before 1820, said Matt Gage, director of the Office of Archaeological Research.

Initial occupation of the site dates to 1816 when Revolutionary War veteran John Click built a log cabin on the property. However, he never got a deed to the property and lost it to John McKee in 1823. McKee was the Cherokee, Chickasaw and Choctaw agent at the time, as well as a land surveyor, and he had helped lay out the city of Tuscaloosa, Gage said.

Over the years, the property was home to numerous businesses, including Augustin Lynch's cabinet manufactory. Known as one of the most important Antebellum furniture makers of the time, Gage said Lynch provided furniture for the Capitol building -- at the time located only a few blocks to the west -- and for some of the early University of Alabama buildings.

He also created ivory billiard balls and sold them to people in Washington, D.C. Gage said they discovered ivory on the site, as well as rusted tools such as saw blades and drills.

The Bank of the State was built on the property in 1829, and Gage said they found some beautiful decorative pieces from that building, as well as a few Spanish coins. The coins are reales minted in Brazil, Guatemala City and Mexico City. The coins were found in pits containing British gun flints and early bottles closer to where Click's log cabin had been, so Gage predicted they were either associated with traders coming through Tuscaloosa or early dealings with the Bank of the State.

"In the early 1800s, foreign currency was used as frequently as coinage minted in the country," he said. "There were so few mints in the U.S. at the time, any currency of monetary value made of gold, silver or copper was given value and could be exchanged as easily as currency minted in the U.S."

The property also housed an ice factory, numerous shanties and other dwellings, a hotel and the Drish building, which was initially used as a warehouse and then a Civil War prisoner-of-war facility. Artifacts discovered included various bottles (including those that held food, as well as drink and medicine), buttons, porcelain pieces, printing press letters, early smoking pipes, architectural elements from the buildings and more.

A gold mine for archaeologists when it comes to historical sites are wells and privies, said Gage, and they found several on this site, including some that had been used by the Union soldiers housed at the Civil War prison. Using soil and flotation samples from the privies, analysts can determine everything from what individuals were eating to how they were being treated, he added.

"It's just a wealth of information," Gage said.

"Tuscaloosa has a very rich history. When you think of the early history of Tuscaloosa, even though the state capitol was here, you still figure that it was a small little enclave, people going about their lives with a predominant lifestyle involving agriculture, but commerce is a major aspect of this block," Gage said.

"There are so many elements of this site that provide a fantastic glimpse of the past and knowing that past is incredibly important. You can never know who or what you are without knowing your history."

Activists say at least 100,000 killed in Syria war

BEIRUT (AP) ? More than 100,000 people have been killed since the start of the Syrian conflict over two years ago, an activist group said Wednesday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has been tracking the death toll in the conflict through a network of activists in Syria, released its death toll at a time when hopes for a negotiated settlement to end the civil war are fading.

It said it had tallied a total of 100,191 deaths over the 27 months of the conflict, but Observatory chief Rami Abdul-Rahman said he expected the real number was higher as neither side was totally forthcoming about its losses.

Of the dead, 36,661 are civilians, the group said.

On the government side, 25,407 are members of President Bashar Assad's armed forces, 17,311 are pro-government fighters and 169 are militants from Lebanon's Hezbollah, who have fought alongside army troops.

Deaths among Assad's opponents included 13,539 rebels, 2,015 army defectors and 2,518 foreign fighters battling against the regime.

Entry of the foreign media into Syria is severely restricted and few reports from the fighting can be independently verified.

Earlier this month, the U.N. put the number of those killed in the conflict at 93,000 between March 2011 when the crisis started and the end of April this year.

The government has not released death tolls. State media published the names of the government's dead in the first months of the crisis, but then stopped publishing its losses after the opposition became an armed insurgency.

Abdul-Rahman said that the group's tally of army casualties is based on information from military medical sources, records obtained by the group from state agencies and activists' own count of military funerals in government areas of the country. Another source for regime fatalities are activist videos showing dead soldiers killed in rebel-held areas who are later identified.

Abdul-Rahman believes the number of combatants killed on both sides is probably much higher as neither the government nor the rebels are fully transparent about battlefield casualties.

Syria's conflict began as peaceful protests against Assad's rule. It gradually became an armed conflict after Assad's regime used the army to crackdown on dissent and some opposition supporters took up weapons to fight government troops.

Even the most modest international efforts to end the Syrian conflict have failed. U.N.'s special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, told reporters on Tuesday that an international peace conference proposed by Russia and the U.S. will not take place until later in the summer, partly because of opposition disarray.

The fighting has increasingly been taking sectarian overtones. Sunni Muslims dominate the rebel ranks while Assad's regime is dominated by Alawites, an offshoot sect of Shiite Islam.

It has also spilled over Syria's borders, especially into Lebanon, where factions supporting opposing sides have clashed in the northern city of Tripoli and in the eastern Bekaa Valley. Lebanese are divided over Syria's civil war, with some supporting President Bashar Assad's regime and others backing the opposition. More than 550,000 Syrians have fled to neighboring Lebanon as a result of the fighting.

Earlier this week, sectarian tensions drew Lebanon's weak army into the fray. Eighteen soldiers were killed in a two-day battle between the army and supporters of a radical Sunni sheik in the southern city of Sidon. The army had earlier reported 17 deaths and said Wednesday that another soldier died of his wounds in a hospital.

The conflict reached the capital Beirut on Wednesday when masked men ambushed a bus and attacked the approximately 30 people aboard with knives, a Lebanese official said. He said 10 people were wounded in the attack in the eastern part of the city, including five Syrians, two Palestinians and three Lebanese, the officials said. He spoke anonymously in line with regulations.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said the bus was carrying Syrians headed to a TV studio in the eastern Sunday Market district to take part in a cultural program. It said there were eight attackers, who fled the area.

The conflict has also polarized the region. Several Gulf states including Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia, Washington's key ally and a foe of Iran, back the rebels. Tehran, a Shiite powerhouse, supports Assad.

Saudi Arabia is sending lethal aid to the rebels. The United States also said it will provide arms to the opposition despite the Obama administration's reluctance to send heavier weapons for fear they might end up in the hands of al-Qaida-affiliated groups. Russia, Assad's staunch supporter, has been providing his army with weapons.

In Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi lashed out at Saudi Arabia, accusing the Gulf kingdom of backing "terrorists" after Riyadh condemned Damascus for enlisting fighters from its Lebanese ally in its struggle with rebels.

Damascus has previously blamed the Sunni Gulf states, who along with the United States and its European allies back the Syrian opposition, for the civil war.

The remarks by al-Zoubi were carried late Tuesday by the state agency SANA after Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Jiddah and condemned Assad for bolstering his army with fighters from Hezbollah. Prince Saud charged that Syria faces a "foreign invasion."

Al-Zoubi fired back, saying Saudi diplomats have blood on their hands and are "trembling in fear of the victories of the Syrian army."

The Syrian military with Hezbollah's help captured the central town of Qusair earlier this month and says it is building on the victory to attack rebel-held areas elsewhere.

On Wednesday, the Observatory said the Syrian regime has tightened its grip of the border area with Lebanon after driving rebels out of the town of Talkalakh, which had a population of about 70,000 before the conflict. The town is predominantly Sunni, but surrounded by 12 Alawite villages located within walking distance to the Lebanon border.

The government's takeover will likely impact rebels' ability to bring supplies, fighters and weapons from Lebanon.

Syrian state TV showed soldiers patrolling the streets of the town, inspecting underground tunnels and displaying weapons seized from the opposition. Talkalakh is located in the central Homs province, which links the capital, Damascus, with the Syrian coastal areas that are the Alawite heartland.

David Chase memorializes James Gandolfini

NEW YORK (AP) ? The creator of "The Sopranos" said at James Gandolfini's funeral that the actor brought the traits of a sad boy, "amazed and confused," to the role of Tony Soprano.

"You were a good boy," David Chase said Thursday at the ceremony at New York's Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine.

One of four speakers at the funeral, Chase gave his remarks in the form of a letter to Gandolfini. The actor's widow, Deborah Lin Gandolfini, and two family friends were also speakers at the ceremony.

Chase remembered that Gandolfini once told him that "you know what I want to be? A man. That's all. I want to be a man." Chase said he marveled upon hearing that, since Gandolfini was a man so many others looked up to.

Chase added that, paradoxically, he always felt that in Gandolfini he was seeing a young boy as well as a man.

"A sad boy, amazed and confused," he said. "You could see it in your eyes. That's why you were a great actor."

The 51-year-old actor best known for his role as mob boss Tony Soprano in the HBO series died of a heart attack last week while vacationing with his son in Italy.

Celebrities and fellow actors were among the mourners, along with members of the public who wanted to salute Gandolfini's work.

Those from "The Sopranos" included Edie Falco, Joe Pantoliano, Dominic Chianese, Steve Schirripa, Aida Turturro, Vincent Curatola, Tony Sirico, Lorraine Bracco and Michael Imperioli. Yet another former castmate, Steve Buscemi, chatted with talk show host-comedian Dick Cavett before the ceremony started.

Others from the acting community included Julianna Margulies, Alec Baldwin, Chris Noth, Marcia Gay Harden and Steve Carell. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was also on hand.

Some 1,500 seats had been set up in the huge sanctuary. A private family wake was held for the actor Wednesday in New Jersey.

Broadway theaters paid tribute by dimming their lights briefly Wednesday night. Gandolfini was nominated for a Tony Award in 2009 as an actor in "God of Carnage."

Susan Aston, who was Gandolfini's longtime dialogue coach and collaborator, spoke at the funeral of how the actor was devoted to his craft.

"He worked hard," Aston said. "He was disciplined. He studied his roles and did his homework." But when the cameras rolled, his performance would become an act of faith that carried him, she said, "to an uncharted place."

New Jersey accents were easy to hear among members of the public waiting outside the cathedral and waiting for a chance to get in. A few people spoke in Italian.

"I'm a fan," said Saul Stein, 60. "I came to pay my respects today because he's a character I identify with, a family man."

One casual meeting with Gandolfini was enough to bring Robin Eckstein to the funeral.

"I had friends that worked with him," she said. "I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and he was just lovely. So warm ... As soon as he knew you were a friend of a friend you were his friend too. He'll be missed. I missed a meeting at work today. I told them I had a funeral to go to."

Meanwhile, directly across Amsterdam Avenue, in the window of a bar, a large photograph of a grinning Gandolfini was on display, accompanied by a handwritten message that spoke for the actor's fans and friends. It said, simply, "Thank you."

NJ Man Admits Sexually Abusing Toddler & Streaming Video Online ...

One choice can change many lives... Faith or Fate by John Ruggiero

TRENTON ? An Ocean County man admitted sexually abusing a 15-month-old boy and streaming footage of the assault over the internet, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Rodford W. Brindley, 68, of Toms River pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Joel A. Pisano in Trenton federal court on June 18 to one count of sexual exploitation of a child.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:

Brindley engaged in online chats with someone who he believed to be a parent living in Ohio, but who was, in fact, a law enforcement officer in Ohio. On one occasion, Brindley engaged in sexually explicit conduct with an approximately 15-month-old child, whom he had in his care at his Toms River home, and streamed live video of that conduct over the internet to Ohio undercover law enforcement officers.

The charge of child sexual exploitation is punishable by a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison and a maximum potential penalty of 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 26.

Fishman thanked the Franklin County Sheriff?s Department in Ohio, the Ocean County Prosecutor?s Office, under the direction of Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato; and the FBI?s Child Exploitation Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Aaron T. Ford in Newark, for the investigation leading to the guilty plea.

Microsoft axes Xbox One 24-hour online checks, used game policy

Both Sony and Microsoft are preparing to launch new gaming systems later this year with Sony looking like the clear winner up until now because it did not make any significant changes to how the Playstation 4 operates.

Microsoft on the other hand announced several changes that turned the gaming world around for part of the company's audience. Among the features that Microsoft introduced were 24-hour online checks to play games and harsh used-game restrictions.

Today, the company announced that it has made the decision to axe several features as it listened to its audience who criticized them heavily ever since they were revealed.

xbox one

Xbox One users can play offline games on the Microsoft system without Internet connection.

That is right, Microsoft has removed the restriction from its gaming system so that you do not need to connect the console to the Internet every 24 hours to continue playing games that require no Internet connection.

Lending, reselling, gifting, renting and trading-in works like today

This is the second big change as several of the options were either highly limited or not possible at all before. This levels the playing field with the Playstation 4 and gives users the same rights that they have today when it comes to these activities.

No regional restrictions

Another surprising change. Microsoft notes that Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console eliminating any regional restrictions.

Kotaku reports that several other features got removed from the system as a consequence as well, or at least won't be available on launch:

 • You cannot share your Xbox One games with up to nine friends or family members.
 • While you get access to games that you have downloaded everywhere you go, this is not the case for games that you bought as discs. Those won't be available on other systems that you log in which means that you need to take your discs with you if you want to play them (just like today).

The changes will be made available as a patch on launch according to the gaming mag which means that owners of an Xbox One need to connect it at least once to the Internet to download the patch.

Closing Words

It is rare to see a big company like Microsoft changing its way before product launch. A couple of factors have certainly played a role in the decision. First that Sony did not follow the company's used games policy or always online policy. Then certainly the criticism the company received after it made the announcements, not only on gaming sites but also mainstream news portals and newspapers.

Hats off to Microsoft for making the decision to reverse those policies but not for removing them. It should never have gotten that far in first place in my opinion.

Winner of 'The Voice' is ...

TV

Image: Danielle Bradbery

Trae Patton / NBC

Danielle Bradbery was named "The Voice" champ on Tuesday.

It was the Danielle Bradbery show on Tuesday night, as it has been all season on "The Voice."

The 16-year-old was crowned as the season four champion, beating fellow finalists Michelle Chamuel and The Swon Brothers. In doing so, she gave Blake Shelton his third championship in a row, and provided a fitting conclusion to a season dominated by country music.

?I don?t even know ? I?m so grateful,? she told Carson Daly when he gave her the good news. ?Sorry ... I?m speechless.?

She was unable to get through her scheduled solo because of her emotions, so at the moment of her coronation, ?The Voice? was silent.

Danielle has been the front-runner since her first blind audition. She?s the winner straight from Hollywood central casting: A teenage girl with no live performances before any kind of a crowd gets discovered and rises to stardom as a national TV audience watches her confidence grow each week. If that sounds like an eerie parallel to ?American Idol? champion Carrie Underwood, who won in that show?s fourth season, well, "The Voice" probably hopes that?s not where the similarities end.

Even on the NBC competition where everyone gets praised as a future superstar, the accolades that have come Danielle's way have been off the charts. Blake several times called her one of the most important people ever to take the stage. Fellow original coach Adam Levine declared her the winner halfway through the finale performances on Monday night. The producers gave her prime slots each week, including two of the final three solos in the finals.

Now, the powers that be behind the show are likely hoping her singles will go to the top of the charts and that she?ll do as well in Nashville as she did on "The Voice," and become the superstar that the show needs. Everyone involved appears to think she has the potential, and she?ll get every chance to realize it now.

Michelle finished in second place. The pride of Team Usher and final remaining hope of anyone who didn?t want a Blake threepeat did all she could on Monday?s show to win support, and was again excellent on Tuesday. But ultimately it wasn?t enough for the alt-rock singer to overcome the country trend.

The Swon Brothers, also of Team Blake, closed out their surprising season in third place, but once again looked like they were having nothing but fun along the way. After all, as they pointed out, they ?got to sing with Bob Seger.?

The night featured the usual array of live performances and video clips. In addition to the Swon-Seger performance, Michelle sang with One Republic, and Danielle with Hunter Hayes. Original coach Christina Aguilera, who is returning next season along with CeeLo Green, had a duet with Pitbull, and Florida Georgia Line with Nelly. Bruno Mars and Cher had solos. Video footage revealed trouble in paradise for the Adam-Blake bromance, and that Usher tends to split his pants when performing.

But ultimately, the star of the night was the youngest singer in the competition, as Danielle once again stole the show.

Indonesia Open 2013: Lee Chong Wei wraps up Men?s Singles title in style ? Badminton news

Malaysia?s Lee Chong Wei, the best player in the world from Malaysia, proved his superior class in the arena and easily wrapped up Men?s Singles title at Djarum Indonesia Open 2013, which ended in Jakarta, on Sunday, June 16.

In the final encounter of this Premier Super Series tournament, the top seeded Chong Wei registered a comprehensive victory over Germany?s Marc Zwiebler by taking just 39 minutes.

Chong Wei was quite calm and relaxed on court and he played his complete game to outshine his un-seeded challenger in a convincing manner. He finished this title match in straight sets with a convincing 21-15 and 21-14 score on the board.

Meanwhile, the lower ranked Marc Zwiebler could not extend his giant killing run against the world?s best shuttler. He lost the final battle without winning any set but left the court with respect for putting up spectacular show throughout the tournament.

From the starting points of final encounter, Chong Wei played with precision and controlled the pace of rallies. He was quick in taking the shuttlecock and employed his powerful smashes coupled with deceptive fast drops shots that put his challenger in trouble.

Chong Wei?s positive and planned play enabled him to dictate the affairs of the game and he easily set up a reasonable lead until the one-minute break.

After the interval, the World Number One Malaysian man continued his power play without leaving any room for his German opponent. He was comfortable in the arena and easily took the first game with a good margin of 21-15.

In the following set, Zwiebler game a good fight in starting points but he was lacking the finishing touch and also failed to shake the superb defence of his Malaysian rival.

Meanwhile, Chong Wei progressed with a wonderful pace on the score board and remained in command until the end of opening half.

After the break, the impressive Chong Wei stretched his lead by dominating the pace from all corners of the court and bagged the game with a remarkable margin of 21-14 and emerged as the title winner in style.

Obesity can be predicted from infancy, researchers find

June 11, 2013 ? Infants as young as two months old already exhibit growth patterns that can predict the child's weight by age 5, according to researchers at Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Tennessee State University.

"Almost from birth, we quickly saw this growth pattern emerge in our curves and growth charts for weight over height," said Susan Ludington, the study's lead investigator and the Carl W. and Margaret David Walter Professor of Pediatric Nursing at Case Western Reserve.

Analyzing well-child records, normal-weight babies with a body-mass index (BMI) in the 17 percentile were found to have plateaued at about two months and rarely deviated over the next five years, she said. Overweight or obese babies crossed the 17 percentile many months later (about age 14 months) and continued an upward climb when BMI growth patterns were monitored.

The findings were reported in Clinical Pediatrics. Ludington collaborated with Lisaann Gittner, assistant professor of public service at Tennessee State University, and Harold Haller, director of Case Western Reserve's Center for Statistical Consulting.

The researchers found that, by age 5, normal-weight children developed differently from birth than those considered overweight, obese or severely obese.

For this study, 221 children were selected from 4,000 records of healthy children under the care of a health maintenance organization. Each had weight, height and medical records from nine well check-ups over the first five years of their lives.

None had a hospital or emergency room visit, medical procedure or other special medical condition, or were on medications that might skew results. No other study of early weight changes has used a sample of only healthy infants and children.

"We didn't want anything to interfere with regular eating," Ludington said.

She said the study also differed from others because researchers had access to maternal health records, with information about the mothers' pre-pregnancy weights and whether they smoked -- a factor that could influence the baby's weight.

The researchers suspect, based on prior research findings by others, how a mother ate during pregnancy might have contributed to a baby's hormones and the ability to satisfy a baby's hunger.

Tracking obesity to the first months of life came after Haller took a new statistical approach to infant growth. He plotted on a graph a baby's weight divided by height instead of using BMI scores as a guideline. By graphing, a pattern emerged that found both girls and boys known to be obese at 5 begin to show significantly higher weight over height than normal weight babies as early as 2-4 months of age.

Because such patterns emerge before children generally start eating solid food, early life growth patterns may provide important information about a person's future health issues, Ludington said.

The researchers also questioned using the BMI index as a guide to growth, which is based on European babies primarily breast-fed in the first year. In the United States, many babies have only formula feedings.

These findings could potentially change the age at which obesity is typically diagnosed, which is now at or after age two.

Ludington said the next step is to find a good intervention that takes into consideration whether a baby is fed on demand or a schedule, the amount of milk a baby receives, whether the baby should have breast milk or formula, and sleep/awake activity patterns of each infant.

Because this study offers a good control group of healthy children, Ludington said, a broader study with thousands of children will determine if those growth patterns hold up for all children, as well as healthy ones.

Presidential cyberwar directive gives Pentagon long-awaited marching orders

The US Defense Department has been given a bright green light to draw up a global cyberattack target list at which it can deploy digital weapons with ?little or no warning to the adversary or the target,? according to a Top Secret policy document leaked to the press.

The policy document, dubbed ?Presidential Policy Directive 20? or PPD-20, is an 18-page cyberpolicy roadmap for the Pentagon that directs it to get on with the business of defending the US and its critical infrastructure, such as the power grid and financial sector, from foreign cyberattack.

While the existence of the document and its broad outlines were revealed in news reports last fall, and a ?fact sheet? on PPD-20 was released in January, the detailed policy document leaked at week?s end shows the unleashing of a military juggernaught.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about cybersecurity? Take our quiz.

Military use of cyberweapons had been paused for about three years, waiting for the end of an intense policy debate and for orders to move ahead with force into cyberspace, cybersecurity experts say.

?What this document does is lay out authority for the US Cyber Command and Joint Chiefs to use cyberweapons,? says James Lewis, a senior fellow with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. ?It lays out how and when you would use these weapons, what you would target, and how you would do so in ways consistent with the Laws of Armed Conflict, rather than just shooting at random.?

Couched in legalistic language, the document authorizes development of offensive and defensive cybersystems that are consistent with the US Constitution, US law, and the international Law of Armed Conflict ? and of a target list to hit with them.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

For instance, ?Offensive Cyber Effects Operations,? or OCEO, is defined in the document as authorizing digital weapons for ?manipulation, disruption, denial, degradation, or destruction? of ?physical or virtual? computer systems.

The document says OCEO ?can offer unique and unconventional capabilities to advance US national objectives around the world with little or no warning to the adversary or target and with potential effects ranging from subtle to severely damaging.?

Under the heading "Policy Reviews and Preparation," the document states that: "The secretary of defense, the DNI [Director of National Intelligence], and the director of the CIA ? shall prepare for approval by the president through the National Security Advisor a plan that identifies potential systems, processes and infrastructure against which the United States should establish and maintain OCEO capabilities."

Most cyberattacks must be authorized by the president, but because attacks happen in milliseconds, the document authorizes the military and other agencies to respond to the threat of an imminent attack or an emergency situation.

Protecting critical infrastructure in the US also is outlined in the document.

Despite years of wrangling, Congress has still not approved legislation addressing cybersecurity for the nation?s infrastructure, and the document does not permit the Pentagon to intrude into networks of domestic companies, such as utilities, and install defenses within computer networks that control the power grid.

But it does allow the military to defend the infrastructure from outside those networks ? by identifying and undermining or destroying the attacking system and its key infrastructure. It allows government agencies, not just the military, to take ?anticipatory action ? against imminent threats? to infrastructure or other systems vital to the US or to US foreign policy.

The procedures outlined in the directive are consistent with the US Constitution, including the president?s role as commander-in-chief, and other applicable law and policies, the White House said in a statement.

?As we have already publicly acknowledged, last year the president signed a classified presidential directive relating to cyberoperations, updating a similar directive dating back to 2004,? Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, said in a statement released Friday. ?This step is part of the administration?s focus on cybersecurity as a top priority. The cyberthreat has evolved, and we have new experiences to take into account.?

This directive, she writes, will ?establish principles and processes that can enable more effective planning, development, and use of our capabilities. It enables us to be flexible, while also exercising restraint in dealing with the threats we face. It continues to be our policy that we shall undertake the least action necessary to mitigate threats and that we will prioritize network defense and law enforcement as the preferred courses of action.?

Indeed, the top-secret document does in several places warn those using the roadmap to use cyberweapons only when absolutely necessary. Because cyberspace is interconnected globally, cyberweapons threaten ?collateral consequences that may affect US national interests in many locations.?

Yet it?s not only collateral damage from cyberweapons, but the fuel that unleashing them provides for the current global cyberarms race that worries Ralph Langner, the Hamburg-based cybersecurity expert who in 2010 first publicly identified the Stuxnet cyberweapon that was used to attack and destroy a substantial chunk of Iran?s centrifuge system for developing nuclear fuel.

Stuxnet, the first publicly identified weapons-grade digital warhead, was created and deployed by the US ? an attack authorized by President Obama and dubbed ?Operation Olympic Games,? according to news reports that the White House has still not formally corroborated.

The biggest threat posed by the PPD-20, Mr. Langner writes, is the model it creates for unleashing powerful cyberweapons into the global network that can then be reworked either by hackers or rogue nation states like Iran and North Korea and relaunched back at the US.

?Nobody actually is able to predict the mid- and long-term effect of cyberweapons,? Langner notes. ?The big issue is proliferation: It is much easier to rebuild a cyberweapon that is out in the open than a kinetic weapon.?

For example, even after the design of the F-35 fighter jet is leaked, it still requires a nation state to actually build one, he writes in an e-mail interview. Not so for cyber. A cyberweapons workshop can operate completely under the radar of satellite surveillance. It could even operate in foreign locations or on hostile soil. And, while building a fighter jet based on stolen blueprints may take a decade or so, it would require a dedicated team of cyberweapons experts just months to reengineer a devastating cyberweapon against US critical infrastructure, he adds.

?It?s kind of a gamble,? Langner writes. ?The US is betting the farm on a short-term win.... Nuclear weapons are the best-case example, here. They were used just twice. I?m afraid that won?t be the case with cyberweapons, if only because of their advantage. They are ideally suited for low-intensity conflict. This makes me project that they will be used much more often than kinetic force.?

At present, about 30 countries are actively building up offensive cyberpower, including rogue states like Iran and North Korea. Against that scenario, he envisions the US essentially supplying its adversaries with cyberweapon designs.

?It?s hard to believe that they will not try to take advantage of a new poor man?s tool for creating destruction,? Langner writes, ?especially when it is so well suited to hitting technologically advanced adversaries like the United States.?

A centralized Notification Center was a great addition to OS X. The problem? Based on their original design, they caused more problems than they solve. In OS X Mavericks, Apple's fixing the notifications so that you can deal with the notification right from a dialog rather than needing to fire up a whole application to use them.

Giants owner Mara confident Cruz will sign

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? New York Giants owner John Mara says progress is slow but steady in the contract negotiations between the team and Pro Bowl wide receiver Victor Cruz.

Mara also says he's confident a deal will be reached. Mara made his comments Tuesday on NFL.com.

Cruz caught 86 passes for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, tops on the team.

The Giants allowed Cruz to test the free agent market by making him a first-round tender, but no other team offered him a deal. He can play for roughly $2.9 million, but wants a long-term deal. He has been absent from the team's voluntary offseason program.

Mara says the Giants "are the right place" for Cruz to play and a deal "will eventually" get done.

Dan Crane: This Feels Very Adult: How Renovating a House Gutted My Marriage

In October of 2011, my wife and I put in an offer on a fixer-upper in Los Angeles, and despite an ominous Tarot card reading in which we were emphatically warned not to buy the house, we bought it anyway -- only to discover through the arduous renovation process that there were irreparable cracks in the foundation of our relationship. Rather than the two of us creating our first home together, I ended up rebuilding and redoing the property alone, an undertaking in which I was convinced I'd fail. Though it was at times pretty miserable, the experience ultimately turned out to be both immensely fulfilling and deeply therapeutic.

What happens when the one thing that is supposed to make you feel secure in the world upends your world? For me it was a gut renovation in the painful sense, but I came out of it an adult, and a true owner of my home. A story I wrote about the process appeared in the New York Times Home & Garden section on April 10, 2013.

Click through the slideshow below for before-and-after photos and to learn more about how the renovation process helped me get through the divorce.

 • This is the photo from the original MLS listing. The property is two houses on one lot, and this is the house my wife and I decided to occupy since it was a one bedroom and the other house was a two-bedroom.

 • This is the front of the house today. The location of the front door was moved, no-water gravel was installed in the front yard, and what was once the entryway became a dining nook.

 • Here?s a photo of the living room prior to renovation. One of the big decisions I made just after my wife left me was to demolish the ceiling in this room. As I mention in the New York Times article, ?As I watched the ceiling cave in, I was suddenly happier than I had been in a long time. I had made a major, entirely rash decision about the house ? by myself. It was liberating.? Once I realized that my wife was truly no longer going to move into this home with me, I gained a new sense of purpose in the renovation. I suddenly took ownership over every decision and it was at once terrifying and empowering.

 • This is a collage of the ceiling demolition.

 • This is what the living room and dining nook look like today.

 • The bathroom was a total gut. When we bought the house, there were holes in the walls and mold growing inside.

 • This is what the bathroom looked like after.

 • The other major piece of the renovation in this house was in the basement. As I mentioned in my New York Times story, one of the most off-putting elements of the house during our first viewing was the ?slow eddy of raw sewage? that ran through the basement. The room had such bad mojo that at one point my mom had even called my wife to ask her to find someone to burn some sage and/or perform an exorcism down there. No joke. This became my office/man cave.

 • Here is the man cave, complete.

 • This is another photo of the man cave.

 • Another amazing thing about the property has been renting out the guesthouse via Airbnb. Not only have my guests loved staying there, I?ve befriended several of them, and plan on visiting one group of Swedes in Stockholm this summer (after I go to Oulu, Finland to host the 18th Annual World Air Guitar Championships). This is a photo of the guesthouse from the original MLS listing.

 • This is the guest house today.

 • Another photo of the guest house.

FDA wants cancer warnings on tanning beds

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Indoor tanning beds would come with new warnings about the risk of cancer and be subject to more stringent federal oversight under a proposal unveiled Monday by the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA has regulated tanning beds and sun lamps for over 30 years, but for the first time ever the agency says those devices should not be used by people under age 18. The agency wants that warning on pamphlets, catalogues and websites that promote indoor tanning. And regulators are also proposing that manufacturers meet certain safety and design requirements, including timers and limits on radiation emitted.

The government action is aimed at curbing cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, which have been on the rise for about 30 years. An estimated 2.3 million U.S. teenagers tan indoors each year, and melanoma is the second most common form of cancer among young adults, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Recent studies have shown that the risk of melanoma is 75 percent higher in people who have been exposed to ultraviolet radiation from indoor tanning. While most cases are diagnosed in people in their 40s and 50s, the disease is linked to sun exposure at a young age.

Physician groups have been urging the U.S. government to take action on tanning beds for years, citing increases in the number of cases of skin cancer among people in their teens and 20s.

"As a dermatologist I see the consequences of indoor tanning. I have to diagnose too many young people with melanoma and see the grief that it causes to these families," said Dr. Mary Maloney of the American Academy of Dermatology, on a call with FDA officials. Maloney said the FDA action is an important first step, but that her group would continue to push for a ban on the sale and use of tanning beds for people under age 18.

Earlier this year, a study of Missouri tanning salons found that 65 percent of 250 businesses surveyed would accept children ages 10 to 12, often without parental permission. The study was conducted by dermatologists at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Currently the machines are classified as low-risk devices, in the same group as bandages and tongue depressors. The proposal would increase their classification to moderate-risk, or class II, devices. That would allow the FDA to review their safety and design before manufacturers begin selling them.

"They don't have to provide any data in advance before they go on the market, so we have no way of providing assurance that the tanning beds are performing up to specifications," said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, FDA's director for medical devices.

Safety standards are important because recent studies show that many devices can cause sunburn even when used as directed. A 2009 study found that 58 percent of adolescents who tan indoors had sunburn exposure.

"If you get an indoor tan you shouldn't be burning," Shuren said.

The Indoor Tanning Association said it supported any changes that improve its customers' safety. But, in a statement, the group added that "we are concerned that these changes will burden our members with addition unnecessary governmental costs in an already difficult economic climate."

The FDA proposal would not place warnings on the devices themselves, but on related promotional material and websites. Some consumer advocates said those warnings might never actually reach users.

"The FDA is requiring that the labels and pamphlets include risk information about skin cancer, but consumers would not be required to see those labels or pamphlets ? they are apparently only for the company buying the tanning bed," said Diana Zuckerman, of the National Research Center for Women and Families.

The agency said it will take comments on its proposal for 90 days before formulating a final regulation. Agency officials didn't give a timeframe for completion, but said it would be a priority.

PFT: Abraham not retiring, despite tweets

As former West Virginia/current Jets quarterback Geno Smith embarks on his NFL career, he?s getting advice from a couple of former West Virginia players who went to the NFL before him.

Former NFL defensive tackle John Thornton and former NFL cornerback Charles Fisher, both of whom played college football in Morgantown, have been advising Smith as he transitions to the NFL.? Thornton, whom we?ve known for several years, confirmed in a telephone interview that he and Fisher are indeed working with Smith.

Currently, that entails organizing the upcoming process of interviewing agents, which will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday.? In addition to Rick Smith of Priority Sports, David Dunn and Joby Branion of Athletes First, and Joel Segal, Eugene Parker also is expected to make a presentation.? The fledgling CAA/Roc Nation joint venture could be part of the process, but we?ve gotten mixed information on that point.? (It?s possible that Roc Nation will be involved, without CAA.)

Thornton also addressed persistent rumors that he and Fisher will be steering Smith to Priority Sports.

?I know people think we?re sending him to Priority, but that?s not the case,? Thornton said.? He explained that the decision of another one of his clients, Chiefs receiver Jon Baldwin, to hire Priority Sports has fueled speculation that Smith will, too.? Thornton pointed out that other players he is advising, including former Marshall receiver Aaron Dobson, a second-round pick of the Patriots, did not hire Priority Sports.

Thornton said he?s in the process of becoming certified by the NFLPA, so that he can become a full-service agent for the players he assists.? And he?s sensitive to the perceptions and the realities of the business.

?I?m trying to protect these kids,? Thornton said.? ?At the end of the day, everybody says they?re trying to help these guys and they?re not.?

With plenty of negative information piling up regarding Geno Smith and no one (including the Jets) working the media to push the other side of it, the sooner Smith hires an agent who can not only stop but also reverse the feeding frenzy, the better.

LG Optimus G Pro coming soon in black

LG Optimus G Pro

Value Pack update rolling out now, brings new camera/playback features

The LG Optimus G Pro may yet be the year's best oversized smartphone -- but it's also one that not many of us here in the U.S. have gotten to play with yet. We've been enjoying the 5.5-inch phone in its Korean form for a while now (be sure to check out our review), and there's a strong possibility we'll see it on AT&T in the coming weeks.

Today, however, LG's teasing a black version of its latest and greatest (on Korea's U+ network) on Facebook. Looks like it's got the same sort of reflective design on the battery cover, but otherwise everything else is the same.

Cabrera comes up big again _ but just shy in major

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) ? Angel Cabrera usually comes up big in these situations.

He did again.

It just wasn't enough to win his second green jacket.

Cabrera forced a playoff with a brilliant iron shot to 3 feet on the 72nd hole of the Masters, but he lost to Adam Scott on the second hole of a playoff when the Australian rolled in a 12-foot putt.

Cabrera just missed a chip-in from off the front of the green at the first extra hole, and his 15-footer on the second playoff hole stopped right next to the cup. He flipped his putter in the air and caught it, then tapped in for par.

At that point, all he could do was watch Scott make his birdie and become the first Aussie to win the Masters.

Mom on bus caught on cell phone video: 'I didn't toss my baby'

By Debra Bogstie, NBCConnecticut.com

A mother caught on cell phone video apparently throwing her baby across the aisle of a bus, prompting a police investigation, says she didn't do it.

"I didn't toss my baby. I set her down," said the woman when NBC Connecticut confronted her at her Hartford home.

The startling scene was caught on tape by a concerned passenger during a bus ride on Albany Avenue Wednesday morning. It's since gone viral with internet postings on YouTube, Facebook, and elsewhere.

The two minute video shows a woman screaming obscenities at another passenger, as her baby sits on her lap at times holding her little ears.

The woman repeatedly asks other passengers to take her child so she can fight the woman. "I will thrash you. Somebody grab my baby. I'm going to beat the... of you on this bus," she's heard saying in the video. Then, it gets worse.

The woman is seen throwing the baby across the aisle into the arms of another passenger. Then, she heads up front and gets into a fist fight.

Read more stories on NBCConnecticut.com

The bus driver pulled over to the side of the road and opened the doors, according to CT Transit. As he called for help, the woman retrieved her baby and left the bus. So did the other passenger involved in the fight.

When NBC Connecticut arrived at her home Friday night, police and child welfare workers were inside talking to her. After they left, we knocked on the door and the woman answered.

When asked if she had any comment on the situation, the woman said, "No. Connecticut Transit, get the full video. I didn't toss my baby. Get the full video."

She then closed the door, only to open it once again.

"I never tossed my baby," she said. "Get the full video from Connecticut Transit. I didn't toss my baby. I set her down."

The video was so shocking that an NBC Connecticut viewer brought it to our attention. We asked Hartford police if they knew about it, and they launched an investigation.

Hartford police have not filed any charges in the case.

As part of their ongoing investigation, they're reviewing a second cell phone video from a different angle. The camera on board the bus was not working at the time of the incident, so there is no surveillance video available from CT Transit.
