Maryland Farm Wedding from Brooke Courtney Photography + Bliss ...

I could put together an entire post gushing only about how spectacular this venue is? a beautiful race horse farm in rural Maryland with lush green pastures, picturesque views, and its own vineyard? I mean, wow. But you see, I would have barely scratched the surface of the story because this farm is home to this bride?s childhood and her family?s history?(the little girl in me just melted).?Brought to us by?Brooke Courtney Photography?and Bliss Weddings and Events, this elegant east-coast wedding is so gorgeous it will make your head spin. It?s also filled with tons of DIY details and nods to the couple?s friends and families. The result is a warm, intimate, incredibly personal event filled with the glow of one very in love boy and girl and you can see it all right here in the gallery.

From Bliss Weddings and Events? Michelle & Harry approached us to help them pull the details of their wedding day together. Despite being on a tight budget, the couple felt it important to include as many of their family and friends as possible without compromising their vision. So with some cost saving tips from us, Michelle?s creative intuition, and the help of family and friends, we all worked tirelessly to bring their vision to life.

Michelle & Harry met their freshman year at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. It was a case of ?opposites attract? for this beautiful country girl from Maryland and handsome city boy from New Jersey. After seven years together they knew they wanted to plan a wedding which was personal and meaningful, and would be a reflection of them as a couple.?Since she was a little girl, Michelle had always dreamed of having her wedding on her family?s race horse farm. This 400 acre property with its sprawling hillsides, a working race track, and a vineyard would certainly be a breathtaking backdrop. The farm houses 3 generations of the bride?s family, including her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In creating her personal touches, Michelle drew inspiration from her family, her friends and her farm. One of the couple?s favorite paintings is of a horse that won the Preakness in 1983 (and the cornerstone of the family business). This very painting, which hangs above the mantle in Michelle?s grandmother?s 18th century home, is depicted on their invitations and response card, and its theme is carried out through much of the d?cor. Carol St. John, the groom?s mother is a well established designer in NYC, and, with the help of her florist friend, Patti Pearce, designed all of the wedding flowers. Michelle?s bouquet was hand tied with lace from her late Aunt?s veil and her great grandmother?s locket. The guests? tables, named after famous racehorses, were decorated with lush flowers in vintage vases and each place setting had a sprig of rosemary, a symbol of remembrance, in honor of those who could not be with them on this day. Michelle?s father, Kevin, hand crafted the ceremony seats and bar backboard from old barn wood. They decorated the bar backboard with jockey silks, plaques, awards and photos ? a tribute to the family?s history and legacy in horse racing. All of the wooden signs, directing guests to the day?s activities, were specially designed by Kevin and the bride and groom.

The local neighbors took part in their wedding by transporting guests in hay wagons from the breeding shed at the base of the farm to the beautiful ceremony spot which overlooked the property. Following the ceremony, as the newlyweds recessed back down the aisle, guests tossed oats in place of traditional rice, to celebrate their union. The couple then boarded their private ?Just Married? get away wagon pulled by the most beautiful Clydesdale horses. The celebration continued with delicious food served during cocktail hour including oysters straight from the Chincoteague Bay, local cheeses, produce, and homemade recipes. A traditional southern BBQ with pit beef, ham, turkey and all the sinful fixings were washed down with Makers Mark (a family favorite), and wine made right on the farm. Because of Michelle and Harry?s love of pie the dessert display included every kind of pie imaginable. The final touch was a 1 tier wedding cake, baked locally using Michelle?s great grandmother?s famous recipe.

Other meaningful details included silhouettes of Washington and Lee painted on the game of corn hole which paid homage to the couple?s alma mater, and a Bruce Springsteen biography book which the couple used as their guest book, paying tribute to New Jersey and their love of music. This book is displayed on the coffee table in the couple?s home and they love flipping through the pages to read love notes from guests bringing back memories of the day.?Every detail of Michelle and Harry?s wedding had a purpose and was a true labor of love.

From Jeff of Brooke Courtney Photography??When I first spoke to Michelle before she booked our team, I knew her wedding was going to be special. On the tippy top of a beautiful horse farm was where they shared their I do?s. But before then, Michelle shared a very special first look with her father. It?s become a tradition now to have a first look between not only the bride and groom but also the bride and her father. And I love it. With that first look, both Michelle and Dad were at ease and ready to enjoy the day. Without a cloud in the sky, guests were taken by carriage up from the house to the hill. There aren?t enough words to explain how beautiful it was. As the sun set we took portraits upon that hill. It was perfect. We rode the carriage back with the sun setting behind us. Music, singing and laughing, all shared by great friends. During the reception, so much love was shared by each family, and their speeches were some of the most touching I?ve ever heard. Such a relaxing, beautiful day for a relaxing, beautiful wedding. Certainly one of Sam?s and my favorites from the 2012 season.

From the Bride??Our families and friends have spent wonderful times at the farm, and in fact, it was here that Harry proposed to me! For us, the farm is home and encompasses all things important to us?not only family, friends, horses and nature, but also good food, wine, and relaxed good old fashioned Southern fun.

The inspiration for the wedding was to have it be rustic to reflect the farm setting, comfortable and relaxed for guests to reflect Harry and I?s vision for the wedding as a bigger version of the many bonfire and band parties we have had there and at Washington and Lee with all our wonderful friends and family, and also incorporate the racehorse theme that is such a big part of my family and the farm. We wanted neutral colors as to not take away from the natural beauty of the farm but also to reflect the fall season with browns and burgundy and textures like straw, burlap, and wood.

Almost every detail of this wedding was DIY ? my dad and mom worked tirelessly on the farm to prepare for the wedding. We did the flowers ourselves and the cocktail hour food as well as the desserts. It was a wonderful team effort, especially for 250+ guests.?My dad and his best friend hand made the benches that the guests sat on when we got married.?The wooden signs that my dad and I made for parking, directing guests and for ones showing the miles to some of our favorite places on earth.?

I hand made our invitations with stamps and used a painting of our horse who won the Preakness as the front of the post card that served as a reply card. That same painting is on the wall in my grandparents? house on the farm where we got ready for the wedding ? it is also on my family?s bottles of wine made with grapes that are grown on the farm that were on each table.

Our signature drinks at the wedding were the ?Uncle Chuck? a drink named after Harry?s Uncle that his family loves and ?the Buck stops here? ? a Maker?s Mark and ginger ? my grandfather?s favorite drink, we named it after a plaque that he has on the front of his desk where Harry asked my dad permission to marry me.

Leading up to the wedding the weather was calling for lots of rain but much of our plans included outdoor activities ? lawn games, hay wagons, and being married overlooking the farm. We didn?t want to use our backup plan so we took a chance and evoked an old southern tradition which says that the sun will shine on your wedding day if you bury a bottle of bourbon at the place where you are to be married. It worked! ? Our wedding day could not have been more beautiful ? full of sunshine, love, and laughter.

A few months before the wedding my cousin Ben passed away in an accident on the farm. He was only 20 years old and we grew up on the farm together, he was more of a brother than a cousin. He and his friends were going to play bluegrass for our wedding until he passed away. We had also decided to get married in the field where by coincidence his accident occurred. We decided to still have the ceremony there and asked the bluegrass band to play ?Wagon Wheel? by Old Crow Medicine Show, one of Ben?s favorite songs as well as a theme song for our time at college in Virginia. We dedicated it to Ben.

From the bride + groom??Our favorite moments were getting into the wagon to go to the cocktail hour with our wedding party. We decided to share the ride with them on a wagon we outfitted with benches and beers on ice instead of our own wagon and it was so great. We drove through the farm drinking and laughing ? my brother and Harry?s best friend playing the guitar as the sun was going down behind us. It was perfect.

Our entrance into the tent was maybe our favorite moment of the whole day ? Our band first did the traditional call to post that every horse race starts with. They then led our parents and the wedding party in with a second line. It was amazing to watch our best friends and family dance their way into the tent in front of us. We made our way to the dance floor where many guests joined us and never left!

(AP) ? Geron Johnson and the rest of the 19th-ranked Tigers headed for their bus parked at the loading dock behind the Cintas Center, saying little as they got ready for a long ride home on a cold, rainy night.

A late out-of-conference loss had just put a dent in Memphis' season.

Short-handed Xavier dominated the first half, blew a 13-point lead, then recovered for a 64-62 victory Tuesday night that snapped Memphis' 18-game winning streak, which was tied for longest in the nation.

The Tigers (24-4) came away with their first loss on the road in more than a year. With one bad night, they also had a few new questions about themselves.

How could this happen?

"It's very weird," said Johnson, who scored a team-high 14 points and led a second-half comeback. "I don't know what to think right now. On our quiet bus ride home, it's going to hit me."

Memphis came into the game tied with Akron for the longest winning streak in the nation. Like the Zips, they'd done it by dominating their conference. Memphis had pulled away from the rest of Conference USA, winning every game since an 87-78 loss to Louisville on Dec. 15.

The Tigers were playing a late out-of-conference game for the first time in nearly 20 years, a chance to see how they measured up against an Xavier team that is trying to make it through a season full of tough breaks.

Even with their indispensable point guard missing because of injury, the Musketeers (16-11) made the Tigers look badly overmatched for a half, then rallied to pull it out at the end.

"I believe in energy, and our energy in the first half stunk, which is full credit to Xavier," Memphis coach Josh Pastner said. "They kicked our butts."

In every way.

So, now what for the Tigers?

Two of Memphis' four losses have come against Atlantic 10 teams ? Xavier and Virginia Commonwealth. They also lost to Minnesota. With a chance to extend that winning streak and show they can hold their own out of conference, the Tigers went into a shell.

"It was out of character," Johnson said. "We had no intensity. We came in here thinking they'll roll over and we'll get our 19th straight win. It's not like that."

The sluggish Tigers scored only 20 points in the first half ? their lowest-scoring half of the season ? and got dominated on the boards, ending a couple of notable streaks. Their 18-game winning streak was fifth-longest in school history.

The school record is 27 straight wins during the 2008-09 season, when Memphis went 33-4 and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. One of the four losses that season came against Xavier.

Memphis was the only Division I school that hadn't lost a road game this season. The Tigers had won 11 straight on the road overall, the nation's longest active streak.

"Eighteen in a row is not easy to do," said Pastner, who was hoping for his 100th win as the Tigers' coach. "You don't take it for granted. Long winning streaks, conference championships ? those aren't birthrights."

Xavier made good on its second straight chance to beat a ranked team at home. The Musketeers blew a 17-point lead before losing to then-No. 24 VCU on Saturday. Point guard Dee Davis left that game with a head injury with more than 13 minutes left, helping VCU rally. He was still feeling the effects and didn't play on Tuesday.

Didn't matter. The Musketeers dominated most of the game anyway.

Travis Taylor had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Xavier, whose 45-36 advantage in rebounds led to 18 second-chance points. By contrast, Memphis managed only four points off rebounds the entire game.

"We knew how big and physical they were," Taylor said. "Coach (Chris Mack) made it a big challenge to give them no second chances."

Johnson made three 3s that helped the Tigers overcome that 13-point deficit in the second half. D.J. Stephens made the first of his two free throws with seven-tenths of a second left, but failed to hit the rim while purposely missing the second shot, clinching it for Xavier.

The Musketeers haven't lost back-to-back home games since 2005-06. After the second-half meltdown against VCU, they weren't going to let it happen again.

"We came into the huddle and talked about how we were not going to let it happen like it did against VCU," forward Isaiah Philmore said. "We had a bad feeling after that game."

Hawaii governor: Sequestration will make Pearl Harbor less secure

(Kent Nishimura/Getty Images)

The United States military base at Pearl Harbor will be made less secure as a result of Washington's failure to avoid across-the-board sequestration budget cuts, Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii warned Saturday.

"The plain fact is that will undermine our capacity for readiness at Pearl Harbor," Abercrombie said, referring to the base that was attacked by Japanese military forces in 1941 that resulted in the deaths of 2,400 Americans. "Now if that doesn't symbolize for the nation that far from overstating it, it is zeroing in on a graphic example of what happens when we fail to meet our responsibilities congressionally, I don't know what does."

Speaking at the annual Winter Meeting of the National Governors Association in Washington, D.C., Abercrombie said that the $487 billion reduction in Pentagon spending will have an impact on 19,000 civilian employees who work with the United States Pacific Command. The budget reduction, he said, would cut four work days from each employee.

For weeks, Democrats and Republicans have issued dire warnings about the potential impact of the sequester--a budget measure that will slash $1.2 trillion from federal spending over 10 years that begins March 1. President Barack Obama last week declared that it would reduce the effectiveness of first responders and health care providers across the country. Abercrombie argued that Obama was understating what could happen if Congress fails to find an alternative to the sequester next week.

"The question about whether this is being overstated is rhetorically, I think, a disservice to what the realities are in terms of everyday lives," Abercrombie said.

Normalize the Sound Volume on Your PC with Windows' Loudness Equalization Setting

Normalize the Sound Volume on Your PC with Windows' Loudness Equalization SettingWindows: If you find yourself regularly adjusting the volume on your computer, you'll want to normalize the sound volume. Although some apps (such as VLC) have normalization options and you can normalize the audio in your media collection with software and hardware solutions, Windows has a built-in setting that could also help.

Open up Sound in the Control Panel (under "Hardware and Sound"). Then highlight your speakers or headphones, click Properties, and select the Enhancements tab. Check "Loudness Equalization" and hit Apply to turn this on. If you have any audio playing at the time, you'll need to restart the application to see the changes.

As the description of this property notes, Loudness Equalization "reduces perceived volume differences"?making quiet sounds easier to hear and louder ones less deafening. It's useful especially if you have your volume set to maximum but Windows sounds are still too low.

SaveDelete has a few other suggestions for boosting volume in specific music players and on tablets and smartphones if you want to tweak in those areas.

Italy's outgoing premier Mario Monti gestures as he speaks at a television show in Rome, Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013. Monti retracted Thursday a comment he made the day before on a supposed preferred outcome in the Italian elections by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, after Steffen Seibert, Merkel's spokesman clarified that the chancellor "does not comment on the Italian elections". In background is a portrait of comedian and blogger Beppe Grillo, whose 5 Stars Movement could be the big surprise at the upcoming Feb. 24-25 general elections. (AP Photo/Mauro Scrobogna, Lapresse) ITALY OUT

(AP) ? The burly man with a shock of silver curls and a scruffy beard gesticulates wildly on Milan's Piazza del Duomo, unleashing a sprawling diatribe against the political establishment.

"Send them home, send them home!" Beppe Grillo cries, as tens of thousands of supporters send up a deafening cheer.

Crisis-hit Italians are fed up. And no one is tapping that vein of outrage better than comic-turned-political agitator Grillo and his anti-establishment 5 Star Movement.

Grillo fills piazzas from Palermo deep in the south to Verona up north with Italians who seem to get some catharsis from his rants against the politicians who drove the country to the brink of financial ruin, the captains of industry whose alleged illegal shenanigans are tarnishing prized companies ? and the bankers who aided and abetted both.

Grillo's campaign is significant not only because he shows strong chances of being the third ? some project even the second ? party in Parliament after the Sunday and Monday vote. The 5 Star Movement is the strongest protest party ever seen in Italy, creating a fluid and unpredictable electorate at a time when the nation needs a clear direction to fight its economic woes. A strong election showing for Grillo could hinder coalition-building efforts among mainstream parties, leading to a period of political paralysis.

"Grillo cannot be underestimated," said Renato Mannheimer, one of Italy's most respected pollsters. "He is very important."

"More than protest, Grillo is an expression of disappointment in this political class. His followers are not anti-political. Most are interested in politics, but these politicians disgust them."

The most recent polls of voter sentiment show Grillo in third place, with 17 percent of the vote, behind Pier Luigi Bersani, the center left candidate for premier, who enjoys 33 percent of the vote and Silvio Berlusconi's center-right coalition with the Northern League in second with 28 percent. Premier Mario Monti's centrist coalition is preferred by 13 percent of voters in the COESIS poll of 6,212 respondents, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percent.

A trading scandal at Italy's third largest bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, as well as accusations of corruption at the government-controlled Finmeccanica and the Italian gas and oil giant Eni have served recently to push a stream of outraged voters into Grillo's arms.

"What happened with the banks, with MontePaschi, reignited interest in Grillo. Grillo is credible on those issues. In Italy, banks and politicians are the most disliked actors on the scene," said Roberto D'Alimonte, a political science professor and commentator for financial daily il Sole 24 Ore.

Critics say that Grillo is good at tapping into voter anger ? getting to the heart of everything that's wrong with the ruling class ? but has few constructive ideas of his own for helping Italy emerge from crisis. Monti, in particular, has called Grillo's success his "greatest worry."

"The people who vote for Grillo and who would vote yes on a referendum on exiting the euro should then fill the piazzas to protest against the catastrophic state that would befall Italy," Monti said recently. "It takes protests, but also proposals."

Pollsters say Grillo's true strength may even be underestimated in the polls because voters could be embarrassed to admit they plan to vote for a former comedian.

While the 64-year-old comic from Genoa has firmly captured the Italian Zeitgeist, many of his messages are raising concern among seasoned political observers, not just political opponents. Grillo's staunchly anti-euro stance has tapped growing animosity toward the EU, which is viewed by many Italians as the architect of painful austerity.

It remains unknown how members of Grillo's movement will behave once in parliament. Grillo himself is not seeking office, being barred from becoming a lawmaker due to a manslaughter conviction for a 1981 car accident that killed two friends and their young son.

Certainly, Grillo has shown no willingness to cooperate with existing parties, and many of his candidates lack political experience ? which the movement's supporters consider to be an advantage.

Grillo is the top pick among first-time voters who find in him an expression for their rebellion. He is also picking up support from disaffected backers of the populist Northern League, who are unhappy that their leaders teamed up with Berlusconi.

It is unclear how many of the 30 percent of Italy's undecided voters will throw in their lot with the comic. Mannheimer believes they will be many.

Grillo's campaign to upend Italian politics is anything but routine.

In a nation where the people get most of their information from television ? dominated in part by Berlusconi's media empire ? Grillo eschews TV, a medium that shunned him for years, and forbids candidates running under his banner from appearing on air at the risk of being booted from the movement.

He seeks more direct contact with his followers, in piazzas and through his blog, one of the most popular in Italy. He approaches his public appearances as he does his stadium comedy routines: He speaks and the audience listens. The one-way flow has led to criticism that he refuses to engage in debates about his ideas with opponents or even supporters ? though that has done little to stem his rise.

Russia sending planes to Syria to deliver aid, pick up citizens

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia will send two planes to Syria on Tuesday to deliver 46 metric tons (50.7 tons) of humanitarian aid and pick up citizens that want to leave the war-torn country, an emergencies ministry spokeswoman was reported as saying on Monday.

Russia has been one of the biggest foreign protectors of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but in recent months Moscow has given signs it may be preparing for his possible defeat.

The planes carrying tents, power generators, furniture and 11 metric tons of food will fly to the port city of Latakia in northwestern Syria, emergencies ministry spokeswoman Irina Rossius said, according to Itar-Tass news agency.

She said that as well as Russian citizens, the planes would pick up citizens from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a regional group of post-Soviet states.

"Citizens of Russia, as well as CIS countries, who want to fly out of that country, will be able to leave Syria on the planes," she said.

Moscow has blocked three U.N. Security Council resolutions that would have increased pressure on Damascus to end the violence which has seen nearly 70,000 people killed in an uprising that is almost two years old.

In January, the Kremlin sent two flights to evacuate 77 citizens from Syria, a signal that Russia may be preparing for the possibility of Assad's fall.

Russia's Middle East envoy Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted in December as saying Syrian rebels were gaining ground and might win. However Russia's Foreign Ministry put out a statement the following day saying that, despite Bogdanov's comments, Moscow's policy on Syria had not changed.

Russia says that Assad's departure must not be a precondition for negotiations to settle the conflict.

Weary passengers head home after stinky Carnival cruise

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) - Thousands of passengers who spent nearly five days stuck on a disabled cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico headed home on Friday by bus, plane or car, relishing the chance for a warm shower and working toilets after finally arriving back on land.

"I got some sleep. I got a shower. A working toilet was really nice," said Nancy Petrone, 58, who was flying to southern California after spending the night in Mobile, Alabama, where tugboats had pulled the stricken Carnival Triumph into port.

It took several hours for more than 3,000 vacationers to make their way off the ship after it arrived late on Thursday. Some travelers kissed the ground when they arrived, while others disembarked wearing the ship's white bath robes - part souvenir and part protection against the chilly night air.

About 100 buses carried passengers on the seven-hour journey to Galveston, Texas, while other buses departed for shorter rides to New Orleans or to hotels in Mobile.

One bus broke down on its way to New Orleans, said passenger Jacob Combs, an Austin, Texas-based sales executive with a healthcare and hospice company.

Carnival officials said the Triumph, which entered service in 1999, would be towed on Friday to a Mobile shipyard for a damage assessment.

The 893-foot (272-meter) vessel was returning to Galveston from Cozumel, Mexico, on the third day of a four-day cruise when an engine-room fire knocked out power and plumbing across most of the ship on Sunday.

Passengers described an overpowering stench on parts of the ship and complained to relatives and media via cellphones that toilets and drainpipes had overflowed, soaking many cabins and interior passages in raw sewage.

The saga, which received extensive coverage on U.S. cable news programs, was another public relations disaster for Carnival Corp, the world's largest cruise company. Last year, its Costa Concordia luxury liner ran aground off the coast of Italy, killing 32 people.

The nature of the troubles aboard the Triumph inspired bathroom-humor banter among late-night comedy shows and the amateur comedians who took to Twitter with poop puns.

But not everyone was in a joking mood. One passenger, Cassie Terry, of Brazoria County, Texas, filed a lawsuit against the company in federal court in Miami, describing the ship as "a floating toilet, a floating Petri dish, a floating hell."

Still, lawyers warned passengers could have a difficult time winning damages in court, while industry analysts said the lure of inexpensive vacations at sea is likely to keep the booming worldwide cruise industry on course toward strong profits.

PRAISE FOR CREW

Passengers had some harsh words for Carnival, but praised the efforts of the ship's crew during the ordeal.

"Just imagine the filth," said Combs, 30. "People were doing crazy things and going to the bathroom in sinks and showers. It was inhuman. The stewards would go in and clean it all up."

Facing criticism over the company's response, Carnival Cruise Lines Chief Executive Gerry Cahill boarded the ship after it arrived in Mobile to personally apologize to passengers.

"We pride ourselves with providing our guests with a great vacation experience and, clearly, we failed in this particular case," Cahill said.

Some passengers said conditions deteriorated rapidly on the Triumph earlier in the week, with people getting sick and being told to use plastic "biohazard" bags as makeshift toilets.

Smoke from the engine fire was so thick that passengers on the lower decks in the rear of the ship had to be evacuated and relocated to other decks of the 14-story ship, where passengers said they slept under sheets for the rest of the voyage.

Some said they tried to pass the time playing cards and organizing Bible study groups, as well as scavenger hunts for the children who were on board.

Conditions improved on Thursday after a generator was delivered to the ship, providing power for a grill to cook hot meals. Passengers said toilets began flushing again and the ship served steaks and lobster - a welcome relief after a steady diet of cold cucumber and cheese sandwiches.

Cahill has issued several apologies and Carnival said passengers will be reimbursed in full, plus transportation expenses, a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, and an additional payment of $500 per person to help compensate them for the ordeal.

Several passengers scoffed at the offer.

"If I go on another cruise, it will not be with Carnival," Petrone said on Friday. "I plan to return their voucher for a free cruise."

Carnival Corp Chief Executive Micky Arison drew criticism in January 2012 for failing to travel to Italy and take personal charge during the Costa Concordia crisis. The tragedy resulted in numerous lawsuits being filed against his company.

Arison made his first public comment about the Triumph incident on Friday via Twitter.

"We are very sorry for the difficult conditions experienced by our guests on Carnival Triumph, but glad that all guests are off safe and sound," he said.

Carnival Corp shares on Friday closed down 43 cents, or 1.15 percent, at $36.92 on the New York Stock Exchange.

We all know that, generally speaking, buying the newest top-end part gets you the most performance. But in most cases, the premium you pay for that part covers a whole lot of other stuff as well that has no bearing on frame rates or video encoding times. We're talking about the added cost of covering research and development, product marketing, lower production yields, etc. That high price also includes a vanity tax, if you will-the extra charge incurred by folks who simply want to have the latest hardware, hot off the fab, for bragging rights. The Value of Building Lasting Relationships | UDig's IT Staffing Blog

Following up on yesterday?s post about communicating with clients, employees, and anyone in your life, I thought I?d take it a step further and write about building relationships. And a relationship post on Valentine?s Day seems rather fitting.

In business, just as in our personal lives, strong relationships are built on trust and understanding. Common interests or common ground can often aid in the development of relationships. The small things that make a person tick ? it could be fishing, hunting, reading, music, running, biking, knitting or any other thing that gets someone excited ? are key elements in finding a commonality that a relationship can be built on. Once a trusting relationship is established then business (and hopefully making money) can fall into place.

We often hear that it?s not always best to do business with your friends but these are the people in our lives that provide the strongest relationships. Having grown up here in Richmond, like many on the UDig team, I have many friends that I come across in my business life. I think this is natural. In staffing, it is important to UDig for our clients, consultants and candidates to trust us. We want to get to understand their business needs, career needs, etc. It is hard to get these details without trust. In business relationships, we demonstrate our trustworthiness through honesty and knowledge sharing. Often we work close enough with these professionals that many become more than business associates but also friends.

Business relationships are built much like friendships ? open honest communication, trust, dependability are all foundations to build strong lasting relationships ? each adding value to the other. Find out what makes your network of contacts, employees, or clients tick ? what makes them want to get out of bed in the morning.? Surround yourself with good quality people and relationships and your business should flourish.

Happy Valentine?s Day!

EU, US to push for trans-Atlantic trade deal

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Union and the United States announced Wednesday that they have agreed to pursue talks aimed at achieving an overarching trans-Atlantic free trade deal.

The 27-country EU said such an agreement, first announced in Tuesday's State of the Union address by President Barack Obama, would be the biggest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated. Any agreement could boost the EU's economic output by 0.5 percent ? a highly desirable outcome when the EU and the US are struggling with slow growth, high unemployment and high levels of debt.

"Both of us need growth," said Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, the EU's executive arm on Wednesday . "And both of us have budgetary problems."

Trade between the United States and the European Union is already huge, reaching ?2 billion ($2.69 billion) a day, EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said.

A high-level U.S.-EU working group on jobs and growth said the goals of the agreement would include removing import tariffs, which average 4 percent, and getting rid of other barriers to trade such as the approval processes that businesses have to go through in order to sell products on both sides of the Atlantic.

In a joint statement issued released simultaneously in Washington and Brussels, President Obama, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and Barroso said they were "committed to making this relationship an even stronger driver of our prosperity".

"Through this negotiation, the United States and the European Union will have the opportunity not only to expand trade and investment across the Atlantic, but also to contribute to the development of global rules that can strengthen the multilateral trading system," they said.

De Gucht said that initial talks should start by summer.

The negotiations will cover a huge array of commercial and agricultural areas. Officials hope to complete them within two years.

'For these negotiations to succeed, we need above all political will," Barroso said. "These negotiations will not be easy."

But he added that a successful negotiation would result in a "win-win" situation, and be "a game-changer."

One example of where the two economies could benefit from the talks is car-making: If each side recognized the other's car safety standards, an auto manufacturer would not have to satisfy two different sets of requirements.

However, some areas of trade likely to remain outside the negotiations. For example, it is unlikely that the European Union will allow the import of many genetically modified crops or beef from cattle treated with certain hormones.

Immediate reaction to the announcement was highly favorable.

"The German government is convinced that such an agreement would be a valuable contribution toward more growth and jobs on both sides of the Atlantic," said Steffen Seibert, a government spokesman.

BusinessEurope, a federation of European business organizations, also welcomed the announcement. Juergen R. Thumann, the organization's president, said an agreement would "significantly boost economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic, strengthen the competitiveness of our main industries and restore trans-Atlantic leadership in trade."

Still snow-buried Northeast seeks help from residents

BOSTON (AP) -- With schools still closed, cars still buried and streets still blocked by the widespread weekend snowstorm, officials around southern New England are asking people to pick up a shovel and help out.

In Boston, a "snow angel" campaign is using social media to encourage neighbors and friends to be an angel and help dig out the stranded.

Hundreds of volunteers carried shovels to downtown Waterbury, Conn., after the mayor promised to pay minimum wage to anyone who helped clear the City Hall area and the schools Tuesday.

In Rhode Island, dozens of volunteers responded to a call by the volunteer advocacy group Serve Rhode Island to help clear snow.

Pedro Gonzalez of Cranston, R.I., had done three shoveling jobs for elderly residents by mid-afternoon Tuesday, fueled only by a few sports drinks and the satisfaction he said the work gives him.

"You feel full, you know?" he said, speaking after his most recent job in Providence. "You feel real good and you sleep better."

The snowfall Friday and Saturday buried the region in 1 to 3 feet of snow, and communities still are struggling to get back to normal.

The storm, blamed for at least 18 deaths across the U.S. and Canada, caused flooding that forced coastal evacuations in Massachusetts and carried high winds that downed trees and power lines.

By early Wednesday, more than 6,800 utility customers still were without power, including 5,539 in Massachusetts, which was hardest hit with outages. More than 650,000 homes and businesses in eight states were without electricity at one point.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's office has encouraged neighbors to help out neighbors after other storms, but this time it's using social media to create a "buzz" and spread the word more broadly, said Emily Shea, the city's Elderly Affairs commissioner.

Shea said most people who call the mayor's hotline for help clearing snow end up figuring things out themselves. But others don't, and the snow angel campaign aims to make sure they aren't forgotten.

"We're still just a couple days after the storm, and we still want to make sure folks are looking out for each other," she said.

The new workforce in Waterbury was formed after Mayor Neil O'Leary took a friend's suggestion to hire kids who are off from school ? and possibly getting bored ? to clear out City Hall and the schools, which are closed at least until Wednesday.

O'Leary put the word out, offering Connecticut's $8.25 hourly minimum wage. He said about 500 people, most between ages 14 and 18 with some adults mixed in, showed up at City Hall at noon Tuesday.

The offer is good again Wednesday, and O'Leary figures the workers will cost the city about $50,000. But he hopes the teens will get more than money in return, he said.

"We're giving them a little sense of community, a sense of pride," O'Leary said.

The Providence volunteers were rounded up by Serve Rhode Island in partnership with the United Way. The group recently deployed hundreds of people to help with Rhode Island's Superstorm Sandy cleanup, so it had a list of possible volunteers to alert. It also requested snow-clearing volunteers on its website.

Share Rhode Island Executive Director Bernie Beaudreau said the group has had some worries over whether people would pose as volunteers and victimize those they were supposed to help. But he said the much larger Sandy operation went well and he expected no problems this time.

"We're banking on the good will of others," he said,

Gonzalez, 40, said he's anticipating some aches for his efforts, but added he's glad to offer his time.

"Personally, I really love it," said Gonzalez, who helps manage his family's convenience store. "I believe that a blessing is useless if you don't share it."

Is this the HTC One? New image hits Twitter

Android Central

This morning notorious Twitter leaker Evleaks posted the above image, claiming it is the forthcoming HTC One. The new flagship from HTC, formerly known as the "M7," looks in this render to be an attractive, if unconventional handset -- its shell seems to share a few design similarities with the BlackBerry Z10 and iPhone 5. HTC Sense also seems to have undergone a bit of a transformation, as evidenced by the new icon style and home screen layout.

If you've been following the recent M7 leaks, you might recognize this design as being very similar to one of the first leaked images to emerge -- an in-software render also sourced by Evleaks. What's a little perplexing, though, is the apparent lack of any multitasking button, replaced in this shot by HTC's logo.

With the Feb. 19 announcement event looming on the horizon we shouldn't have to wait too long to see what HTC has up its sleeve. (And in the meantime, the usual "pinch of salt" advice concerning leaked images applies, despite Evleaks' solid track record in this area.) But if the image is indeed real it, looks to me like HTC could be heading in the right direction.

(AP) ? The mother of an Alabama boy held hostage in an underground bunker for days said her son witnessed officers fatally shooting his kidnapper.

Jennifer Kirkland's comments about her son, identified by authorities only by his first name Ethan, came in an interview with Dr. Phil McGraw for an episode of the "Dr. Phil Show" that is set to air Wednesday.

In a promotional clip posted online, Kirkland said her 6-year-old son saw officers shoot the gunman identified as Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, of Midland City.

"He says, 'The Army came in and shot the bad man,'" Kirkland said.

The FBI said agents wearing combat gear entered Dykes' bunker on the sixth day of the standoff in southeast Alabama. Dykes was shot multiple times, a coroner said.

Authorities said Dykes shot and killed Ethan's school bus driver before grabbing the child off the bus and taking him into an underground shelter constructed on his rural property.

Ethan wasn't physically injured, but his mother said he has had a difficult time sleeping, and she is worried about him.

"I'm scared of how he's going to take getting on a bus," she said.

Kirkland said she wanted to swap places with her son during the standoff but wasn't allowed to. It wasn't clear in the promotional excerpt whether she made a formal offer to Dykes.

"I wanted to be there," said Kirkland.

Authorities have said they might never know why Dykes shot driver Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, and took the boy off the bus on Jan. 29.

Dykes was due in court the day after the standoff began for a hearing on a menacing case filed in December. Neighbors say he fired a gun at them. Neighbors and acquaintances described Dykes as having strong feelings against the government.

Apple CEO Cook: 'We're unrivaled' in innovation

Apple CEO Tim Cook defended the company's cash hoard, said that innovation is in the corporate DNA, added that the smartphone market may be the best ever and outlined his acquisition strategy. He also knocked the PC industry's focus on specifications and noted the iPad is the "poster child" of the post-PC era.?

cookapple091212

Cook, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, addressed Wall Street analysts and investors for the second consecutive year. Generally speaking, Cook has been much more open with investors than former CEO Steve Jobs.

The overall theme from Cook was that Apple doesn't buy the limits of large numbers and has existing markets---namely tablets and smartphones---that can continue to grow.?

Cook covered the following topics as he repeatedly noted that Apple can continue to grow:

  • According to Cook, the tablet market is a huge opportunity for Apple and the iPad is the poster child for the post-PC era. "It creates an experience that's draw dropping," said Cook. He added that more iPads were sold than PCs. "We're in the early innings of this game," said Cook. "You can see the whole of Apple (with the iPad."
  • Cannibalization. Cook said he has been asked about cannibalization of products repeatedly. Whether it's the iMac killing the PowerBook or iPad killing the Mac. "If we don't cannibalize someone else will," said Cook. He added that the iPad can poach share from the Windows ecosystem for years to come. "If companies worry about cannibalization it's the beginning of the end," said Cook.?
  • The PC market competed on two things---spec and price. "Customers want a good experience, quality and an aha moment," said Cook. Companies that talk about the specification of something are hiding the fact their products don't deliver a great experience. He added that no one cares about Apple's chip speeds, pixels in a display and other specs. The display comments were a knock on the OLED spec war. "The only religion we have is that we must do something great," said Cook. "We won't make a crappy product."
  • "The age old model of everyone doing a sliver of something is over. Apple can do integration better than anyone," said Cook, referring to the PC market's partner model.?
  • Can Apple do platforms around the world? Cook was asked about whether Apple can do cloud services in emerging markets, which limit content and music purchases. "Our App Store is operating in 155 countries," noted Cook. iTunes, iCloud and iBooks also operate in numerous countries. "I really feel like we advanced significantly last year in building our infrastructure around the world," said Cook. "Our intention is to have our ecosystem everywhere."
  • The retail strategy. Cook said Apple continues to grow its retail footprint. "There's no better place to discover and explore our products than retail," he said. "It's the best retail experience. You realize the experience is there not for selling but serving. It helps you get more out of your products." Cook said store isn't the right term. The retail outlets are the core of Apple, not the headquarters in Cupertino. Apple will also retool and expand stores as well as add to the retail roster, he said.?
  • For Apple, innovation is embedded in the culture. "Innovation is strong as ever and in the DNA of the company," said Cook. "Apple is the center of innovation." He added there's no set formula for innovation and if there were one companies with a lot of cash would acquire it. Innovation is about skills and leadership. "Apple has skills in software, hardware and services. The model that grew the PC industry where companies specialized. That model is not working for what consumers want today," said Cook. "Consumers want this elegant experience." The real magic happens at the integration of hardware, software and services. "I think we're unrivaled in that," said Cook.?
  • Apple has paid developers $8 billion, up from the previous mark of $7 billion.
  • Would Apple do a large acquisition? "We've averaged an acquisition almost every other month (for the last three years)," said Cook. Those companies typically had engineers and intellectual property. PA Semiconductor was a prime example of a good Apple acquisition. PA Semi became the engine of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touches.
  • On the laws of large numbers, Apple doesn't believe in limits. "It's because of that Apple has been able to do so many things over the years," said Cook. He added that when he zooms out he sees a growing market that Apple can address with smartphones and tablets. "All phones will be smartphones," said Cook. He called the smartphone the best market ever and noted Apple has a lot of upside in China, the app ecosystem and global expansion. "The iPhone is only available to 50 percent of the world's subscribers," he said.?
  • Regarding cheap phones, Cook said "our North Star is great products." "We wouldn't do anything we considered a cheap product," said Cook. "That said we have done things to appeal to people more price sensitive." An example is the lower pricing for iPhone 4 and 4S. Cook added that Apple ran out of supply for iPhone 4. "We have made moves to make things more affordable," he said.?
  • Cook said that Apple aimed for a less expensive Mac but couldn't deliver a great product. Apple solved the sub-$1,000 PC issue with the iPad.
  • He countered the argument that Apple had a depression mentality about cash---a charge leveled by investor David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital. Cook said Apple is investing in R&D, stores, supply chain and is also financially conservative. "A company investing a pair of 10s over two years ($10 billion in capital expenses) doesn't have a depressionary mindset," said Cook. "We do have some cash, but it's a privilege to be in this position to seriously consider returning additional cash to shareholders." Cook added that the board is in deliberations.
  • Cook added that the cash debate is about the rights of shareholders. Apple is looking at things to improve governance further, said Cook, responding to hubbub over the company's preferred shares practices via Greenlight's lawsuit. He said Greenlight's lawsuit over Apple's cash is "a silly sideshow" and the money used for pay for lawyers should be given to a better cause.
