Editor's desk: Macworld|iWorld 2013 bound!

Early tomorrow morning I'm jumping in a plane and flying to San Francisco, California for Macworld|iWorld 2013. Since it's been well below -20 celsius in Montreal this week, I'm looking even more forward to it than usual.

Leanna Lofte, who usually covers the SF events with me, just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Lucy Danae Lofte, so she's sitting this one out. There are very few people in our line of work with her camera skills, so to make sure we keep the level of quality you guys expect and deserve, we're bringing Martin Reisch with us this year. Yeah.

There'll be a lot going on, and we'll be doing our best to bring you with us every step of the way with photo journals, videos, podcasts, and a bunch of social sharing. Here's the plan so far:

There will be tons of other stuff happening in and around all that, so make sure you keep your browsers locked to iMore's Macworld|iWorld page, and subscribe to the iMore YouTube channel to get all the latest videos as soon as inhumanly possible.

And for up-to-the-minute stuff, including everything and anything unfit for print, you can follow @reneritchie and @safesolvent on Twitter.

Last year Macworld|iWorld completed their transition from trade show to epicenter of the community, from a place to see Apple stuff to place to meet and enjoy the company of fellow Apple enthusiasts. I can't wait to see what they have in store for all of us this year.

Let me know what you'd like to see from our Macworld|iWorld coverage, and if you're going to be there are well, please do come up and say hello!

Algeria admits mistakes in international hostage standoff

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Algeria's foreign minister acknowledged that security forces made mistakes in a hostage crisis at a Saharan gas plant in which dozens of foreign workers were killed during Algerian military strikes.

Mourad Medelci also conceded that Algeria will need international help to fight terrorism. Algeria's decision to refuse foreign offers of aid in handling the crisis, and to send the military to fire on vehicles full of hostages, drew widespread international criticism.

"We are in the process of assessing our mistakes," Medelci told The Associated Press in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Friday.

He did not, however, identify any mistake or address specific criticism of the chaotic and bloody operation. But overall, he suggested that the Algerian government did the right thing.

"In that assessment we are leaning more towards establishing that the operation was a success," he said.

The Jan. 16 attack, which an al-Qaida-affiliated organization has claimed responsibility for, sent scores of foreign energy workers fleeing across the desert for their lives. A four-day siege by Algerian forces on the complex left at least 37 hostages and 29 militants dead. Some of the fatalities were badly burned, making it difficult to identify them.

The minister said Algeria is likely to reinforce security measures at sites where multinationals operate in the oil- and gas-rich country. But he insisted that foreign workers in Algeria "will continue to work in Algeria and that is the best way to answer the terrorists."

He defended the government's decision to attack instead of negotiating, pointing to its years of experience dealing with Islamist extremist violence.

"Faced with such an attitude (of terrorism), it's not just words that solve the problem. It's action," he said.

But he admitted that Algeria can't face international terrorism alone.

"It absolutely needs support," he said.

He argued that Algeria wasn't the target of the attack. Instead, he said, the terrorists were targeting investors and the foreigners who work for them.

An international group of militants led by a Mali-based warlord staged the attack. The extremists demanded an end to the French-led military operation in neighboring Mali, where al-Qaida-linked groups have seized and expanded control over the past year.

Mommypage Learn How to Balance It All with Nicole D. from ?Tiny ...

Tell us more about yourself, your site, and your family.

I am a mother to four ? two boys and two girls, ranging in age from 15 months to 13 years . My husband is a supportive, albeit sports-obsessed, P.E. teacher. Together we are raising our noisy brood in Annandale, VA. After my second child was born in 2006, I decided to leave my job in public relations/communications and stay home, but I still needed to earn an income. This is when I opened my home-based daycare and discovered that there is an amazing secret society that forms when you put a few toddlers and preschoolers together. ?I love what I do, even though it isn?t always easy balancing everything. Anyone who says raising a family is easy is probably lying. Embracing our imperfections and letting go of our mother?s guilt is the key to surviving it all. Tiny Steps Mommy is where I write about all of this ? parenting, children, families, daycare, and surviving the chaos one tiny step at a time.

Why did you decide to start your site?? What has been your favorite part about blogging?

In March 2012, I started my blog Tiny Steps Mommy as an outlet for me to express my thoughts and keep my writing skills fresh. I have always loved writing. It is my passion. Yet for many years I put it on the back burner because I didn?t think I had the time. I discovered that I could make the time by giving up a little sleep and a lot of television. Amazingly, I do not miss watching TV and I feel more energized than ever because I am doing something that feels fulfilling. I also discovered that other people are actually reading my writing, which feels great. It is a great confidence booster when you pour your heart into writing something and then people you don?t even know say that you have touched them, or that they relate to you. I think this may be my favorite part of blogging ? making an impact.

How do you balance your daycare and spending time with your family?? What advice can you give to other busy moms?

The reason I started my daycare was to be home with my family. Even though my daycare is open 52.5 hours every week (five days a week) and I am working much more than I did in an office, I never feel like my job is getting in the way of spending time with my family. I manage this by incorporating my children into everything I do with the daycare ? it truly is a family business. This does not mean it is always easy, especially when my children are tired of sharing my attention. My last two children were born into this world where there are ?friend? days (weekdays) and ?non-friend? days (weekends). It is their normal. I have to admit though that in the evenings, I need some non-child time, which is why I depend heavily on my husband to manage the evening/bedtime routine. Having a supportive and hands-on partner is critical to surviving. My best advice to busy parents (which is every parent) is to take some time for you and accept the help of others when it is offered (don?t be afraid to ask either). Also, if your partner or someone else helps, then do not micromanage the way he or she does things, because that may be the last time help is offered. Help is help.

What is it like having four children?? How do you manage taking care of everyone?

My husband and I both grew up in large families. To us a noisy home is a happy home, which is why being a party of six feels absolutely right. Our biggest challenge is making sure we parent to the personalities of each child. Similar to teachers who have to teach based on the different learning styles of their students, parents have to parent to the unique personality of each child. A one-fits-all method does not work. The tricky part is customizing your parenting, while being fair to all. We are not perfect and neither are our children. I think once you accept this, it makes everything a little easier.

What are a few things you?ve learned from motherhood?

  • I am going to make mistakes.
  • My children are going to make mistakes.
  • There are not enough hours in a day to get everything done.
  • It?s okay not to keep up with the laundry.
  • You have to be flexible and roll with the unexpected.
  • Children grow fast, so enjoy every moment you can.
  • Laughter is the best medicine.
  • Hug, hug, hug, and then hug again.

What are your top 5 favorite things to do with your family?

  1. Snuggle in bed and tickle and laugh
  2. Visit playgrounds and play tag
  3. Curl-up and watch a family movie
  4. Reading books together
  5. Go on nature walks (mini adventures)

Syrian troops and militia push to take Sunni Homs areas

AMMAN (Reuters) - The Syrian army has stepped up an offensive on opposition Sunni Muslim strongholds in the central city of Homs, bringing in ground forces and loyalist militia to try to secure a major road junction, opposition sources said on Friday.

Around 15,000 Sunni civilians are trapped on the southern and western edge of the city near the intersection of Syria's main north-south and east-west arteries, crucial to let the army travel between Damascus and the Mediterranean coast, opposition campaigners in Homs said.

Rebels said they had moved into new areas of Homs this month to grab more territory, which could explain the offensive. Activists said that rebels had asked them not to report on the advances because it could provoke retaliatory strikes.

But activists in Homs said a barrage of army rocket, artillery and aerial bombardment had killed at least 120 civilians and 30 opposition fighters since Sunday.

In the south, eight members of Syria's military intelligence were killed by an Islamist militant car bomb on Thursday night near the frontier with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, opposition activists and a violence monitoring group said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bomb was planted by Al-Nusra Front, a rebel unit fighting to oust Assad that the United States has labeled a terrorist group.

"We think the blast might have killed a colonel who has been leading the fight against rebels in the area," Rami Abdelrahman, head of the Britain-based Observatory said. The building targeted is in the town of Saasa, 14 miles (23km) from the frontier with the Golan Heights, he said.

Syrian authorities have banned most independent media, making it difficult to verify such reports on the ground.

The nearly two-year-old conflict has now killed an estimated 60,000 people and a military stalemate has formed while hundreds of thousands of refugees flood into Syria's neighbors.

The Syrian Interior Ministry called on Thursday for Syrian refugees to come home and said they would be guaranteed safety.

A statement on the state news agency SANA said the government was "offering guarantees to all political opposition sides to enter the country ... (and) ... take part in the national dialogue without any query."

Few who left have returned, especially opposition supporters, and Assad said in a speech this month that he would not talk with opposition members he said had betrayed Syria or "gangs recruited abroad that follow the orders of foreigners".

The war has reached every province in the country and fighting has encroached on the heart of the capital Damascus, with residents reporting the daily thud of artillery being fired on rebel-held districts in the outskirts.

U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford told CNN on Thursday that Assad's mother Anisa Makhlouf and his sister Bushra had both moved to the United Arab Emirates. It is not clear why they left.

SHABBIHA BROUGHT IN

Activist Nader al-Husseini, speaking by phone from the western sector of Homs, said at least 10,000 pro-Assad shabbiha militiamen had been brought from the coastal city of Tartous to back up the regular army.

"They go in infantry formations behind the soldiers and their specialty is looting and killing civilians," he said, adding that among dozens killed by the shabbiha were a family of five in the village of Naqira.

Husseini said 100 wounded civilians were trapped in Homs' western neighborhood of Kafar Aya and that the Free Syrian Army rebels had tried to negotiate a deal to evacuate them but failed.

Opposition sources blame shabbiha for the death of more than 100 Sunni men, women and children when they overran a nearby area 10 days ago.

Mostly Sunni Homs, a commercial and agricultural hub 140 km (90 miles) north of Damascus, has been at the heart of the uprising and armed insurgency against Assad and his establishment, composed mostly of Alawites, who follow an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam and comprise about 10 percent of the population. There is a large Alawite minority in Homs.

Syrian authorities have not commented directly on the latest offensive, but official media have in the past referred to the need to ?cleanse' the city of what they described as terrorists who were terrorizing peaceful neighborhoods.

Tareq, another activist, said the fall of Kafar Aya and the adjacent neighborhoods of Jobar and al-Sultaniya would make the position of Sunnis in the city untenable.

"These districts are the front line with Alawite areas from where rebels have been sometimes disrupting the road between Damascus and Tartous. If they fall the Assad army will have carved a big hole to proceed deep into Homs and secure the link to the capital."

Why "Gut Churn" Helps You During the Creative Process

Why "Gut Churn" Helps You During the Creative ProcessWhy "Gut Churn" Helps You During the Creative Process We've all experienced "gut churn." It's that feeling when your stomach stops to function while you wait for something to happen. It might be as light as a few butterflies, or as heavy as a full gut churn. As Radiolab producer Jad Abumrad points out at a B?hance Conference, that horrible gut churn feeling is more important to the creative process than you think.

When Abumrad was creating his show, he realized that the overwhelming "gut churn" feeling was one of the most important parts of the process. As he describes it, "the idea that your creation can be anything can be hard to grasp." That fear then drives you along to figure out what exactly you're looking to create. Abumrad also goes through the creative process at Radiolab as well, which includes "stupid, long meetings," post-it notes, and frustration. The overarching theme here is pretty simple, creativity is often pretty brutal, and it requires a tough skin, and a tough gut. Abumrad closes with this piece of advice:

You can take the worst feeling in the world, reframe it, and suddenly that feeling is the solution. We can run from that feeling, or take that feeling itself as the pointing arrow. "Okay, I feel like my stomach is going to explode, but maybe that just means I'm on the right track."

It's good advice, especially if you happen to take that "gut churn" as a sign to back away from a project. Listen to Abumrad's full presentation in the video above.

Internet Marketing: Proven Strategies That Work

Note From Steve: This is a guest post from another blogger. (Click here info about guest posting on my site.)

Internet marketing is one of the many options available to people who are exploring additional avenues to maximize their earnings. Apart from internet marketing being a high income fetching hub, it can be a challenging exercise too. This is the case since online technology provides space for all players to play their game, and if they score goals or not, it is up to them.

Therefore, internet marketing is very competitive and sometimes frustrating if one cannot play his game smart. Because of the competitive nature of online business, there are various strategies that internet gurus employ in order to stay ahead of the competition. The following are some of the internet marketing explained strategies employed by online business people in order to increase reach effectiveness.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO has become one of the most widely used methods of driving traffic towards websites, blogs and any other online sites intended for public use. SEO experts target search engines as a means of reaching millions of internet users worldwide. The reason why search engines are targeted is because search engines are used by many researchers to acquire information from the internet.

In ensuring that search engines respond positively to a certain website, SEO experts first conduct ?keyword research to determine probable phrases to be used by online users when searching. They later use these keywords to write compelling content, which in turn brings attention of users to the website.

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the best internet marketing strategies that business people use. This kind of marketing is based more on commission and networking, whereby one person can promote a product to many people. Once these people buy the product, the person who promoted the product earns a certain commission. One of the reasons why the strategy is highly successful is that it involves groups of people known to one another. For instance, an affiliate can be someone?s uncle or a close a friend. Because of the relationship developed earlier, it becomes easier to sell among these people.

Content writing

Producing great content for the website is another way of driving traffic. Through content creation, people get to know about the website. This is because it is through this content that search engines are going to detect the existent of that website in the first place.

For content to be appealing to many people, it has got to have certain characteristics:

Simplicity ? simple and precise content appeals more to the readers than hard and complex content. In most cases, online clients will always move away from sites that have complex content.

Fresh ? employment of SEO techniques ensures that the website content is visible over the internet. This though is not enough as that content ought to be fresh and up to date. Fresh and up to date content is more believable since it is deemed to be relevant to the most recent challenges in the market.

Organized ? the way the website content is organized always determines how many people will read it. Poorly arranged content makes it hard for the client to get answers, which means that most clients will look for an alternative.

The Autism File ? Green Home?Healthy Kids

For over a decade, I?ve been writing about harmful chemicals in our environment and how they jeopardize our children?s health and development.?We have made significant strides in identifying, controlling and eliminating many toxic exposures but there is still an overwhelming amount of harmful chemicals that go unregulated in the market place and parents continue to be concerned about their safety.

Many of these exposures start in the womb?in 2004, the Environmental Working Group identified over 287 chemicals found in umbilical cord blood, and many were listed as carcinogenic, neurotoxic, teratogenic and endocrine disrupting.?These same toxic chemicals, as well as other potentially dangerous environmental exposures, can also affect and hinder development in adolescents and teens.

Puberty normally begins between the ages of 10 and 16 and can last from two to five years. During puberty, your child?s body goes through a number of metabolic and physiological changes that could intensify the effects of toxic exposures that may not be detected for years.? These exposures are also capable of triggering bouts of aggression, depression and defiant behavior making life miserable for everyone.

If you have a child who has a chronic illness or a developmental disorder you probably already know that environmental toxins can further compromise their fragile immune system and exacerbate already challenging behaviors. With their body changing and hormones racing, a child could experience even more difficulty controlling his or her emotions. All the more reason for parents to do all they can to minimize toxic exposures whenever possible. Here are a few categories to be aware of so you can make healthy changes?

Personal Care Products

Kids are vulnerable to additional exposures that come along with transitioning into the adolescent and teen years. Many popular personal care products, including cosmetics, deodorants, fragrances, hair and skin care products, are formulated using potentially harmful ingredients, some of which are known carcinogens, neurotoxins and hormone disruptors (see chart at bottom).

On average, teens use about 17 personal care products per day, which exposes them to approximately 174 chemical ingredients every day. This means your child is repeatedly absorbing a toxic chemical cocktail (see chart for ingredients to avoid).

Feminine Hygiene Products

These can contain dioxins, a by-product of the bleaching process used in the production of feminine hygiene products. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, dioxins from feminine pads and tampons can put girls and women at risk for ?effects that could suppress the immune system, increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, reduce fertility and interfere with fetal and childhood development.? Mothers should educate their daughters about these dangers and buy organic feminine hygiene products.

Insecticidal Hair Products

Each year between six and 12 million kids get head lice, and it?s common for parents to turn to insecticidal shampoos and treatments to eradicate them. However, most pesticide-based, over-the-counter treatments are highly toxic and have been linked to neurological and other health problems.

Non-pesticide-based remedies are a safer alternative and include mayonnaise, olive oil, essential oils, and ready-to-use products such as Cetaphil lotion and LiceMD. And don?t forget the old-fashioned approach: plenty of hair conditioner and a nit comb, repeated every week or so until your child?s hair is free of lice.

Cleaning Products

Most cleaning products contain harsh toxic chemicals that are listed as carcinogenic and can impair neurodevelopment as well as cause irritation, allergies, and asthma. These products also are a constant source of indoor air pollution?on average, indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air.

Modern Technology

In addition to chemicals found in food, personal care and cleaning products, there are other environmental exposures that most of us just haven?t paid enough attention to, partially because we are often guilty of overexposing ourselves.?I?m talking about cell phones and computers.

Today?s teens are without question the beneficiaries of many of the wireless technological advances of the last decade. They may also be the first generation to grow up with almost unlimited access to cell phones and computers. Studies have suggested frequent cell phone use could increase the risk of brain tumors, migraines, and some behavioral problems in children. Last year, the World Health Organization?s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified cell-phone radiation as ?possibly carcinogenic to humans.?

There are 285 million cell phones in use in this country, and two-thirds of children over the age of seven use them. More often than not, cell phones are used for entertainment too?today?s smartphones have become a coveted social connector that enable teens to spend hours talking to friends, listening to music, browsing the Internet, playing games and even watching movies. When they aren?t talking on the phone, they often carry them around in their pockets close to their bodies where radiation can be absorbed into their tissues.

Dr. Joel M. Moskowitz, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, and the director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the School of Public Health, has become a prominent voice questioning current cell phone regulations. In 2010 Dr. Moskowitz wrote: ?We should address this issue proactively even if we do not fully understand its magnitude. Our government has faced similar public health threats in the past. In 1965, although there was no scientific consensus about the harmful effects of cigarettes, Congress required a precautionary warning label on cigarette packages?more specific warnings were not required until 1984. Should we have waited 19 years until absolutely certain before we informed the public about these risks??

Similar to cell phones, computers are another source of electromagnetic radiation.?It may be decades before we fully realize what the cumulative effects of low-level radiation will mean for today?s generation of kids that began using cell phones and computers at such an early age, but we do have some early data to suggest that there may be some serious unintended health consequences.? Radiation emitted from both cell phones and computers have already been linked to sperm damage.

Eliminate the Threat

So how do we as parents protect our kids who are transitioning into their adolescent and teen years from environmental insults that can threaten their health and future? It?s simple?know what is in the products you purchase. From cosmetics to cell phones, spend a little time investigating the ingredients and safety of the products your kids use. Environmental exposures can be insidious and persistent. Each stage of development?pregnancy, infancy, and puberty?creates new windows of vulnerability in which the effects of exposures can result in serious health problems. Repeated exposures from a variety of products and sources can add up.

Instead of getting stressed out and feeling powerless, parents need to understand the dangers and then minimize their family?s exposures. We must, to the extent we can, take control over the environments in which our children live, learn and play and reduce or eliminate these threats whenever possible.

8 Ways to Reduce Your Child?s Exposure

?? Campaign For Safe Cosmetics Teens generally use more personal care products than adults. Teens for Safe Cosmetics is a coalition of enthusiastic young women who are educating their peers and policymakers about the dangerous toxins found in most personal care products. They were a driving force in the passage of The California Safe Cosmetic Act and other legislation aimed at eliminating toxic chemicals in many consumer products.

?? Clean Green Replace all of your toxic household cleaners with safe ?green? non-toxic products. You essentially need five or six green cleaning products: all purpose, glass cleaner, laundry liquid, dish soap and cream cleanser for tub, tile and porcelain?check out our selection of Greening the Cleaning? products. Compliment these green products with ingredients already in the cupboard: white distilled vinegar (for laundry softener, cleaning floors to alternate with all purpose cleaner), baking soda and lemon juice (to clean grout and copper pots).

?? Curb Computer Use Limit time on the computer, and place it in a ventilated area. Don?t allow computers in your child?s bedroom. Attach a radiation filter plate to your computer screen.

?? Go Organic By eating more organic foods you will help prevent unnecessary and dangerous pesticide exposure. Organic products are rich in all of the vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients a teenager needs to feel good, look good and perform well. If you eat animal, dairy and cheese products, stick to organic to reduce your dioxin, hormone and pesticide exposure. Check labels and bypass foods that contain dyes and synthetic food additives?focus instead on whole, fresh foods (canned and ready-prepared microwaveable meals may contain BPA).

?? Drink Pure Water Use a home water filtration system, and fill stainless steel or BPA-free bottles for when you?re on the go.

?? Don?t Smoke There are over 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 of which are known to be harmful.

?? Manage Pests Safely Many of the chemicals used by exterminators are known carcinogens, neurotoxicants and teratogens. Utilize a pest control or lawn service company that does not use dangerous pesticides.

?? Improve The Air Installing an air filtration system will help improve your home?s indoor air quality.

Notre Dame official explains not disclosing hoax

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? A Notre Dame spokesman says the university decided against disclosing the hoax against Manti Te'o immediately after an investigation commissioned by the school confirmed it because they didn't think it would be in the best interest of the teams playing in the BCS championship game or the individuals involved.

University spokesman Dennis Brown tells the South Bend Tribune in a story Sunday (http://bit.ly/YgO3aU) that some school administrators thought they should release what they knew about the hoax when they became aware of it.

The hoax about Te'o's "dead" girlfriend became public Wednesday when it was reported by Deadspin.com. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said after the news broke that Te'o and his family had intended to disclose the hoax, saying he believed they intended to do so on Jan. 21.

PST: Zusi, Bruin impressing Klinsmann at US camp

We know Jurgen Klinsmann prefers to swim in the ?positive? end of the pool. Always.

As a starting point, we can probably assume that everybody is having a great national team camp out in sunny Southern California.

But perhaps some people are having a really super-duper great camp ? even greater than everyone else.

Graham Zusi and Will Bruin seem to particularly be impressing the boss, for instance.

Zusi got a head start on the training camp bunch, training for a few days at West Ham. The additional fitness work and the sharp edge needed to train with an English Premier League outfit? certainly didn?t hurt the Sporting KC man as he got into U.S. camp.

Here?s Klinsmann on how Zusi looks with the U.S. men after training with West Ham:

He?s in very, very good shape. Graham obviously has a little advantage because he?s already done this before, and players that were already in a camp know now that you can?t come in unprepared. So he?s very well prepared and certain players you could see right from the beginning had given themselves a head start, which is normal.

Bruin (pictured) is participating in his first camp. The Houston Dynamo striker needs to step lively here and seize the opportunity, because Alan Gordon or Chris Pontius could well have been picked over Bruin but for their injuries. It sounds like he?s holding his own:

Will is a team player, is focused 24/7 and he?s a great finisher. We?re trying now to give him another level, a more fast-paced rhythm than what he?s used to ? which is normal for a new player in a National Team environment ? and he adjusted to it right away. So far he?s done really well.?

There?s more from Klinsmann in an interview he did two late last week in California with the USSoccer.com staff.

Are Businesses Hesitant to Connect With Hispanic Consumers ...

Branded

An insider?s guide to small-business marketing.

As we learned in the recent presidential election, it?s always a good idea to connect with Hispanic Americans. In many parts of the country, this is as true in business as it is in politics. But for some reason, many businesses seem hesitant to try to appeal to this big and important demographic.

At my boutique advertising agency in Austin, Tex., I see lots of opportunities for businesses to set themselves apart and pick up some market share by reaching out. But I am often puzzled by the number of retail and professional service businesses that pass up these opportunities. When we have broached incorporating Hispanic outreach with retailers, we have explained why outreach makes business sense and how subtle shifts in their marketing programs might appeal to Latino consumers. The initial reaction has been one of surprise, intrigue and excitement ? followed by little or no action.

Here?s what we know about the size of this large and growing market: According to the Selig Center for Economic Growth, Hispanics control $1 trillion in annual buying power in the United States. By 2015, Selig projects that power to grow to $1.5 trillion, basically the size of the economy of Mexico. So why does this large and desirable population continue to be overlooked by many businesses?

Over a recent lunch of tortas de hongo and nopales at an East Austin Mexican restaurant, I posed this question to Juan Tornoe of Cultural Strategies, a multicultural marketing and communications firm my agency has partnered with. Mr. Tornoe is chief marketing officer at Cultural Strategies and also writes a Latino marketing blog called Hispanic Trending. His insights have been quoted by The Times, NPR, CNN and many others, and as you?ll see, he is quite passionate about Hispanic marketing.

Mr. Tornoe said that while he has spoken on this topic at lots of national business meetings, he too often sees lots of enthusiasm but little action. Why is that? He believes one reason is that many marketers think they have to advertise in Spanish, and he suspects this intimidates them. But he insists that reaching this demographic does not require Spanish-language advertising. In fact, he said, placing a few Spanish-language ads on Telemundo or Univision is unlikely to accomplish any goals.

This confusion, he said, was apparent last summer when Julian Castro, the mayor of San Antonio, gave the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention. Some people were surprised to learn that Mr. Castro is not bilingual. ?Many business people think that Spanish language is the only thing that defines people as Latinos,? Mr. Tornoe said. ?Julian is an English-dominant guy because his mother, the daughter of an immigrant, got ridiculed at school because of her English. So she made sure her kids? first language was English.?

Mr. Tornoe also cited the presidential campaigns and the advice the candidates must have received from their staffs that the only way to reach out to Hispanic voters is through Hispanic media. ?That is completely untrue,? he said. ?If you are Univision, you go out there and tell the world, ?I bring you the Spanish market.? But the fact is, they bring you Spanish-dominant Latinos, which is a smaller percentage of the Spanish market as a whole.?

The biggest growth in this fast-growing demographic, he said, is coming not from immigrants but from the birth of second- and third-generation Hispanic Americans. ?Some Latinos,? he said, ?get ticked off when you reach out to them in Spanish ? those who are third or fourth generation.?

Mr. Tornoe cites himself as an attractive target for any marketer. He is 44, an immigrant from Guatemala, and he lives in Austin. ?According to media and advertising circles,? he said, ?I should be glued to Telemundo, Univision, and Spanish-language radio, newspapers and Web sites. But the reality is, I don?t access any information in Spanish. Everything I absorb is in English.?

He finds most businesses that try to reach Spanish audiences try to simplify marketing to a degree that renders their efforts ineffective. But there are some marketers, he said, who get it. For example, he noted a Volkswagen commercial you may have seen that shows two guys getting in a car for a road trip. The point of the ad, titled V?monos, is to highlight the fuel efficiency of a Passat. The guys, who don?t speak Spanish, start a Spanish-language lesson CD as their trip gets underway. At their first stop, a gas station, they alight from the car speaking Spanish fluently and with passion.

?This ad is brilliant in so many ways,? Mr. Tornoe said. ?They get the gas economy point across. And for Latinos who are not glued to Hispanic TV, suddenly those guys are speaking to us in Spanish! And they reflect my reality that I live a very bilingual and bi-cultural life. I have no idea if that was the advertiser?s intention, but it was a huge home run.?

Personally, I believe Volkswagen is much too savvy a marketer for the language these guys were learning to have been just a happy creative coincidence. In my next post, I will offer some suggestions on how small businesses can better connect with this audience.

Dear Abby dies: Her wit, warmth, and snappy advice stay with us

Dear Abby's alter ego, Pauline Friedman Phillips, died Wednesday at 94. The Dear Abby advice column ran for decades alongside that of Pauline's twin sister, who wrote Dear Ann Landers.

"Dear Abby" advice columnist Pauline Friedman Phillips, known to millions of readers as Abigail van Buren, died Wednesday. In this picture, she was signing autographs for dozens of fans after the dedication of a "Dear Abby" star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Valentine's Day, 2001.

"You could move,"?Dear?Abby?replied.

That zinger was such classic?Abby?? real name, Pauline Friedman Phillips ? that it moved her daughter to burst into laughter Thursday when reminded of it, even though she had just returned from the funeral of her mother, who died a day earlier at age 94 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

"People weren't really talking about homosexuality back then," Jeanne Phillips, who now writes the famous syndicated column, said. "But you know, there wasn't a subject my mother wouldn't take on."

As the world said goodbye to?Dear?Abby?on Thursday, the Web was full of her snappiest one-liners, responses to thousands of letters over the decades that she wrote in her daily column. But her admirers noted that behind the humor and wit was a huge heart, and a genuine desire to improve people's lives.

"She really wanted to help people," said Judith Martin, the etiquette columnist known as Miss Manners. "Yes, she wrote with humor, but with great sympathy. She had an enormous amount of influence, and for the good. Her place in the culture was really extraordinary."

The long-running "Dear?Abby" column first appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1956. Phillips was hardly experienced, but she had managed to snag an interview for the job. A skeptical editor allowed her to write a few sample columns, and Phillips was hired.

She wrote under the name Abigail Van Buren, plucking the name Abigail from the Bible and Van Buren from American history. Her column competed for decades with that of Ann Landers, who was none other than her twin sister, Esther Friedman Lederer (she died in 2002.) Their relationship was stormy in their early adult years, but they later regained the closeness they'd had growing up in Sioux City, Iowa.

Carolyn Hax, who writes her own syndicated advice column, feels that one can't speak of one sister without the other, so influential were they both, and at the same time.

"Any of us who do this owe them such a debt," she said. "The advice column was a backwater of the newspaper, and now it is so woven into our cultural fabric. These columns are loved and widely read, by people you wouldn't expect. That couldn't have happened without them."

In a time before confessional talk shows and the nothing-is-too-private culture of the Web, the sisters' columns offered a rare window into Americans' private lives and a forum for discussing marriage, sex and the swiftly changing mores of the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

The two columns differed in style, though. While Ann Landers responded to questioners with homey, detailed advice,?Abby's?replies were more flippant and occasionally risqu?, like some collected for her 1981 book "The Best of?Dear?Abby."

Dear?Abby: My boyfriend is going to be 20 years old next month. I'd like to give him something nice for his birthday. What do you think he'd like? ? Carol

Dear?Carol: Nevermind what he'd like, give him a tie.

Dear?Abby: I've been going with this girl for a year. How can I get her to say yes? ? Don

Dear?Don: What's the question?

Jeanne Phillips, who took over the column in 2002 after a few years of sharing the byline, recalled in a telephone interview Thursday her mother's response to a woman who wrote in detail of how many drinks she'd shared with her date one night. "Did I do wrong?" the woman wrote, in the daughter's retelling.

"Probably," her mom responded.

Greece to probe former finance minister over tax list scandal

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's parliament voted early on Friday to probe former Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou for his role in a scandal over a list of potential tax evaders that has rattled the fragile ruling coalition.

In a relief for the government, Socialist chief Evangelos Venizelos, a former finance minister and one of three coalition leaders, escaped an inquiry into his handling of the list after lawmakers voted by a wide margin against the move.

A motion to investigate former prime ministers Lucas Papademos, a technocrat, and George Papandreou, a Socialist, was also defeated in the late-night parliamentary vote.

The "Lagarde list" of about 2,000 Greeks with money stashed in Switzerland has exploded into the latest political scandal in Greece, with many angry that successive governments failed to pursue those on the list while heaping austerity cuts on everyone else.

Tax evasion is a major problem in Greece, which tumbled into unsustainable debt by years of spending more than it brought in.

Twists and turns in the scandal - including revelations that the list was misplaced, locked away in a cabinet, copied and tampered with - have further tainted a political class widely seen as corrupt and to blame for the nation's financial crisis.

Only the motion to investigate Papaconstantinou - expelled from the socialist PASOK party after names of three of his relatives were deleted from the list - was expected to pass since it was backed by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's government. 265 out of 294 lawmakers backed the motion in the vote.

Samaras has resisted calls by the opposition Syriza party to support a probe into his fellow coalition leader Venizelos, who was given the list when he succeeded Papaconstantinou in the finance minister post but took no action on it.

"Just like the Mafia, you abandon the weakest link to the dogs to cover up the case," Syriza's 38-year old leader Alexis Tsipras said before the vote.

"They kept the file a well-kept secret at a time when they raided wages and pensions, claiming that they had no other choice," said Zoe Konstantopoulou, another Syriza deputy.

A motion to investigate former prime ministers Papademos, a former European Central Bank deputy president, and Papandreou, of PASOK, failed to attract broader support since being proposed by the right-wing Independent Greeks and far-right Golden Dawn parties.

MUDDY WATERS

The Lagarde list, named after former French finance minister Christine Lagarde who is now International Monetary Fund president, was first given to Athens by the French government in 2010. Little was heard of it until its existence was revealed in September last year.

It then quickly became a political hot potato, with Greek authorities coming under fire for arresting a magazine editor who published the list. He was later cleared of charges of violating privacy laws.

The deepening scandal around the list threatens to undermine Samaras's government, which has secured aid from foreign lenders to avert a national bankruptcy but remains beset with internal rifts over a painful austerity program the country must follow.

Samaras's refusal to back a probe into Venizelos has already cost the ruling coalition the support of three lawmakers - two from the small Democratic Left party were expelled for backing such a probe while one PASOK lawmaker resigned in protest.

That left Samaras's ruling coalition with the support of just 163 deputies in the 300-seat parliament, but still with more than the 151 deputies needed to force an investigation.

Papaconstantinou, a U.S. and British-educated economist who served under Papandreou, has denied tampering with the list, and says he is the victim of an attempt to incriminate him.

"If I wanted to do such tampering, would I have done it in a way that implicates me so blatantly?" he told parliament on Thursday ahead of the vote.

"Could I not have, for example, removed not just the three names of my relatives but 10, 20, 50 more in order to muddy the waters? Names that would implicate others and not just myself?"

He denied he had lost a CD with the list, saying: "I gave it to my secretary to keep it safe and I don't know where it is today - if it's somewhere in the ministry, or if something else happened."

Belfast tears of joy as 1 Algerian abductee freed

DUBLIN (AP) ? Stephen McFaul's loved ones say they cannot believe he's escaped unharmed from the Algerian hostage crisis ? and never want him to work in the energy fields there again.

The 36-year-old Irish electrician telephoned his wife Thursday to say he had escaped the custody of al-Qaida extremists after one day's captivity and was safe with Algerian security forces. The call came hours after reports that dozens of hostages could have been killed as the Algerian army struck the militants' positions inside the Ain Amenas natural gas plant.

While dozens of families in many nations from Japan to the United States waited in hope for similar news, the McFauls threw their arms around each others' shoulders in the living room of their Catholic west Belfast home.

"I feel over the moon, really excited. I just can't wait for him to get home," said his 13-year-old son Dylan, choking back tears in the arms of his grandmother Marie.

She tried to stem his tears, patting his head and offering words of comfort. "Yes he's coming home... And we'll party."

The McFauls said their jubilation reflected the stark fact that, just hours before, they had feared Stephen was dead ? but remained mindful that dozens of families worldwide still remained in that terrible place.

"It's been hard. I've tried to put a brave face on it," said his father, Christopher. "But not knowing what's happening out there ? I feel sorry for the other hostages and their families, the ones who's still there and the ones who've been killed."

His wife Angela stayed away from the media with the couple's 4-year-old son Jake, but she did meet Irish Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore in Belfast to brief him on the surprise call.

"Angela told me there is not a scratch on him," said Gilmore, who added that McFaul was expected to fly home to Belfast on Friday.

McFaul had worked in North Africa's oil and natural gas fields off and on for the past 15 years, and had flown back to Algeria to resume work for the Norwegian energy company Statoil the day after Christmas. As on all his previous visits home, his brother Brian said, other family members had asked him if he had any security fears.

"Every time he came home we asked him: Are there any problems? And he said no, there's no problems where I am," his brother said.

McFaul was able to call his parents' home twice Wednesday as militants stormed the facility ? first to say he'd avoided capture by locking himself in a room, later to pass on his new captors' demands.

"He phoned me to say al-Qaida were holding him, kidnapped, and to contact the Irish government, for they (the militants) wanted publicity. Nightmare, so it was. Never want to do it again," Marie McFaul said.

All three generations of the McFauls agree on one key point: No matter how safe their adventurous relative felt in North Africa, this must be his last assignment there because their hearts can't take the worry.

"He'll not be back! He'll take a job here in Belfast like the rest of us," his mother said with a chuckle.

Dylan, still crying in her arms, concurred. "I'll never let him go back there," he said. Asked what he planned to do when he saw his dad Friday, he said, "Just give him a big hug, and I won't let go."

AD OF THE DAY: Garnier Fructis' beard campaign - Business Insider

Garnier's newest ad campaign in Switzerland will have you scratching your head. These men appear to have the most luxurious beards we've ever seen ? all thanks to Fructis, no doubt. Or do they? Look closely:

Ad agency Publicis, Switzerland, creatively positioned a girl, with the same exact hair color as the man's hair, in front of the man at just the right height. The man's beard is really the back of the woman's head. Check out the pants if you need more proof. Those are back pockets, not front pockets.

Here's a couple more from the campaign:

(AP) ? A Syrian airstrike slammed into a house in a rebellious suburb of Damascus early Monday, killing at least 13 people including eight children, activists said, as President Bashar Assad's regime ramped up its operations against the opposition strongholds ringing the capital.

Government forces have used warplanes and multiple rocket launchers over the past 24 hours in what activists described as some of the heaviest barrages of the Damascus region since the government launched an offensive in November to dislodge rebels from the capital's outskirts. At least 45 people were killed in a government barrage on Sunday, opposition groups said.

The air raid early Monday struck a home in the southern suburb of Maadamiyeh when residents were still inside, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human rights and other activists said. Locals pulled 13 bodies ? including those of eight children ? from the rubble, the Observatory said, adding that at least seven more people remain trapped.

Syrian state media, however, refuted that account, and blamed rebels for the deaths in Maadamiyeh. The official SANA news agency said "terrorist" fired a shell at the neighborhood from nearby Daraya, hitting a residential building and causing casualties.

"The noise from the bombardment is astounding today," a fighter who identified himself as Iyad said by satellite phone from an area near Maadamiyeh.

"The regime is using all kinds of weaponry, they are shelling Maadamiyeh from nearby mountains and we are hearing that there are a lot of casualties,' he said, adding that telephone lines to the area have been cut.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed young men walking over piles of rubble, searching for people as women, apparently trapped inside buildings, could be heard wailing and crying for help. A voice in the background said the video is of Maadamiyeh.

A man cried "God is great" as the camera closed in on what appeared to be a child's body covered in rubble. The child is face down on the ground next to another body, with a hand sticking out from under the rubble.

In another video, the bodies of at least two children could be seen, their faces bloodied from what appear to be wounds to the head. One of the two children, a toddler, was lying on a gurney partially covered in green blankets as a woman is heard crying and screaming : "Why? Why, oh God, why?"

The caption says the children were less than a year old and were killed in the Maadamiyeh attack Monday.

The videos appeared consistent with activist reports from the area.

Fighter jets also carried out fresh airstrikes on the suburb of Daraya, a strategic suburb close to a key military air base. Last week, the government said it has regained control over more than half of the suburb.

Iyad, the fighter outside Damascus, said the regime on Sunday dispatched reinforcements to Daraya. The fresh troops were trying to advance and hold the territory, but have been unsuccessful.

Monday's attacks come a day after airstrikes and heavy shelling killed at least 45 people in the Damascus area.

The deadliest attack was reported in eastern Ghouta district, where 24 people, including eight children, were killed by government air and artillery strikes. The rest of the casualties, including 13 rebels killed in clashes, were in other neighborhoods outside the capital.

Regime warplanes also bombed targets in the north Monday, hitting rebel positions inside a sprawling air base in Idlib province in an effort to regain control of the facility.

Rebels captured the Taftanaz helicopter base, which includes an airstrip, on Friday, dealing a major blow to Assad's forces that have relied on its airpower in the fight against the opposition.

The Observatory said the rebels retained control of the Taftanaz base that had been used by the Syrian government to carry out airstrikes nationwide and transports troops and supplies around the country.

A shell fired from Syria landed on an empty field near the Turkish border village of Akcabaglar, in Kilis province late Sunday, damaging an olive tree, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. No one was hurt.

NATO has begun deploying Patriot missiles along Turkey's southern border with Syria to protect the NATO ally country from any possible spillover from the civil war in Syria. The six Patriot anti-missile systems are scheduled to become operational later this month.

In recent months, Turkey fired artillery across the frontier to retaliate for Syrian shells hitting Turkish soil, after five civilians were injured in October.

It was not clear however, whether Turkish troops had retaliated to Sunday's shelling.

The fighting has rage in Syria at a relentless pace despite a recent diplomatic push to try to secure a peaceful settlement to the nearly 2-year-old conflict, which the U.N. estimates has killed more than 60,000 people.

In a speech earlier this month, Assad dismissed international calls to relinquish power and vowed to continue fighting rebels.

The speech was condemned by the U.S. and its Western and Gulf Arab allies, while Assad's backers in Russia and Iran said his proposal should be considered.

Those fighting to topple the regime, including rebels on the ground, have repeatedly said they will accept nothing less than the president's departure, dismissing any kind of settlement that leaves him in the picture.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Western demands that Assad step down. While acknowledging that the initiatives to talk to the opposition, "probably don't go far enough," Lavrov called on the opposition to come up with their plan to end the bloodshed.
