Sony: New PS3 Slim ?Perfect? For People Not Buying Wii U

Sony is continuing to push the PlayStation 3 line with a slimmer model, and their UK office thinks it?ll be a holiday hit. According to one exec, it?s perfect for people passing on the Wii U.

That claim comes from PlayStation UK managing director Fergal Gara, who told CVG that the casual gaming crowd is ripe for the pickings this year:

?If you look at the upcoming Christmas market, the Wii will be selling in very low volumes ? it?s on its way out ? and the Wii U will arrive, but it will bring in a relatively small number of early adopter consumers,? he said.

?We see ourselves well positioned for the casual market who won?t buy Wii U on day one. We?ve got a wow moment, we feel. I remember when people picked up the Wii controller for the first time, that was a big moment, it was a casual market breakthrough, but we thing we?ve got a casual market breakthrough as well with Wonderbook and the lowest priced PS3 yet.?

At this point, the PlayStation 3 has just about caught up with the Xbox 360 on a global scale (after languishing in third place its entire lifecycle), but still trails well behind the original Nintendo Wii.

Month-by-month sales will determine who wins the holidays, though. Unless Nintendo has mass production and supply issues, it?s unlikely that the PS3 can outsell the Wii U at the end of the year, especially if it does as well as the original Wii, which netted 600,000 units sold during its first week in North America alone.

Netanyahu says "red lines" stop war but do they?

BERLIN (AP) ? In a dramatic gesture, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a "red line" on a diagram of Iran's nuclear program and called on the world to do the same to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons ? a step the Iranians insist they don't intend to take.

Red lines, Netanyahu declared, "don't lead to war." Instead, he argued Thursday before the U.N. General Assembly that "red lines prevent war" by making clear the limits of international tolerance.

Eytan Gilboa, an expert on U.S.-Israel relations at Bar Ilan University, said red lines are considered less severe a warning than an ultimatum, which includes a threat of consequences.

History shows that the effectiveness of such warnings often depends on a country's resolve to follow through and accept the consequences.

LINE IN THE SAND

On August 2, 1990, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein sent soldiers and tanks into neighboring Kuwait and annexed the tiny, oil-rich nation as Iraq's 19th province. Six days later, President George H. W. Bush told Americans that "a line in the sand has been drawn" and ordered U.S. troops to Kuwait's neighbor Saudi Arabia.

Armed with a U.N. Security Council resolution and congressional authorization to use force, U.S. and allied jets launched air attacks on Baghdad and other Iraqi targets. The ground assault began Feb. 24 and within days the Iraqis had been driven out of Kuwait. Iraq accepted a cease-fire on March 3 and Kuwaiti sovereignty was restored.

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS

One of history's most dangerous red-line moments came in October 1962 when U.S. President John F. Kennedy revealed to the world that the Soviet Union had been installing missile sites in Cuba, and demanded that Premier Nikita Khrushchev remove them. For 13 tense days, the world seemed headed for nuclear war. Kennedy declared a quarantine on all offensive military equipment headed for Cuba ? effectively a "red line" around the Caribbean island nation ? and threatened to turn back any ships carrying armaments. For their part, the Soviets tested a 300-kiloton hydrogen bomb as a reminder of Moscow's military might.

Ultimately behind-the-scenes negotiations produced a deal to avert nuclear holocaust. Khrushchev agreed to withdraw nuclear weapons from Cuba and Kennedy privately promised to decommission largely obsolete U.S. missiles in Turkey.

BERLIN AIRLIFT

In 1945 the victorious allies divided the Nazi German capital into Russian, American, British and French zones, with each occupying power getting full access to the entire city. The Soviets considered West Berlin, located 110 miles into the Communist-controlled east, as a thorn that should be eliminated. Access to the city was Moscow's red line.

Three years into the occupation, the Soviets began restricting Western rail, road and canal entry to West Berlin. With 1.5 million Soviet soldiers around the city, Moscow effectively presented the West with the choice of acquiescing to Soviet demands and leaving or seeing its part of the city starve.

In response, the U.S. and its allies began flying in thousands of tons of food, fuel and other supplies. By the spring of 1949, the airlift was bringing in more supplies than had been delivered by rail. The blockade was lifted in May 1949. West Berlin served as a Western outpost until the collapse of Communism and the reunification of Germany some 40 years later.

54-40 OR FIGHT

In the 1840s, the phrase "54-40 or fight" became the battle cry for American expansionists in the Democratic Party who wanted the United States to push the border of the Oregon Territory north to Alaska. The numbers referred to the latitude of Russian-controlled Alaska. Britain also claimed much of the territory, now the Canadian province of British Columbia, and called the Americans' bluff, threatening war if that's what the hawks wanted.

The United States, already embroiled in a conflict with Mexico, was in no position to challenge the world's foremost military power. The issue dragged on until 1871 when the U.S., exhausted by four years of civil war, signed a treaty recognizing the border with Canada ? well south of the "54-40 or fight" demand.

Curiosity goes to the flow

Mars rover appears to have landed in a dry streambed

Web edition : 6:57 pm

It seems NASA chose the Curiosity rover?s destination wisely: The craft appears to have landed right in an ancient streambed. Tasked with searching for signs of life-friendly environments on Mars, the rover can now cross off ?find evidence for water? from its life-friendly to-do list, NASA announced in a press conference September 27.

NASA sent Curiosity to Gale Crater because data from orbiting spacecraft suggested the site had a good chance of having once been wet. Still, the speed with which the discovery came seems to have surprised the team.

?It is exactly the reason we chose this landing site,? said project scientist John Grotzinger of Caltech.

The best evidence for ancient rushing water comes from the rocks Curiosity has paused to investigate while wheeling toward Mount Sharp, an enormous pile of sediment rising from the crater?s center. These rocks, called conglomerates, are made of pebbles cemented together by once-wet sediments. ?

In other words, they?re rocks made of rocks.

Curiosity glimpsed its first conglomerate at the landing site, where retrorocket engines dusted off the planet?s reddish veneer and revealed the speckled bedrock beneath. ?There?s a layer there that seems to have rocks embedded in it,? said Mike Malin of Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego. The feature is now named ?Goulburn,? after geologic deposits in northern Canada.

Then, after stretching its wheels, the rover encountered another site called ?Link,? where more conglomerate rocks were found. The pebbles there and elsewhere point toward a watery transport mechanism, said Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz. Smooth and polished, roughly 1 centimeter across ? the size of a plain M&M candy ? the pebbles couldn?t have been transported by anything except water. ?These are too large to be transported by wind,? Williams said. ?The consensus is that these are water-transported gravels.?

Eventually, the rover found a rock called Hottah (named for a Canadian lake), which juts out of the Martian dust at an angle, jagged edges pointed skyward. ?To us, it just looked like somebody came along the surface of Mars with a jackhammer and lifted up a sidewalk,? Grotzinger said.

The 10- to 15-centimeter thick outcrop was once submerged, he said. ?And we can characterize that water as being a vigorous flow, on the surface of Mars.?

The interpretation is robust, says geologist Joseph Michalski, also of the Planetary Science Institute. ?There aren?t very many ways by which you can produce rounded pebbles like that.?

But the water?s source ? whether melting ice, rainfall, or groundwater ? and its duration on the surface are still open questions.

Scientists think the Martian streambed grew from a canyon that funneled water into Gale Crater. Roughly 18 kilometers miles long, about 600 meters across and 30 meters deep, the canyon ? called Peace Vallis ? cut into the crater rim, sweeping sediments to the crater floor and forming a floodplain. Had Curiosity landed roughly 3.5 billion years ago, she might have found herself in a stream, ?from ankle to hip deep, and maybe moving a few feet a second,? said William Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

And while large, rounded pebbles certainly point to fast-flowing water, they don?t indicate anything about the flow?s duration, Michalski says. ?You may have had punctuated activity, or it could have been sustained for a shorter period,? he says. ??It doesn?t mean that it had to stay wet for millions of years.?

So, is it mission accomplished? Game over for the rover?

Not quite.

The rover is still tasked with searching for signs of a life-friendly environment, and with exploring the rocky record contained in the layers of Mount Sharp. In addition to water, the rover will look for organic carbon ? from which life could be built ? and molecules that could serve as an energy source. ?We?ve got a hall pass for the water observation,? Grotzinger said. ?Now we?re going to move on to the chemical building blocks of life and the elemental chemistry and the mineralogy.?

Is Getting Married Easier Than Going to Work? | Psychology Today

A student once asked me if I ever wanted ?to get married, stay home, and take it easy instead of go to work."

I laughed for five minutes. She was laughing with me?despite having absoutely no idea what was funny about her question?until I explained, sputtering, that "being married and staying home" was much, much harder than going to work. "If you want to have a good marriage and a stable home, it's never easy," I told her, from the heart, as I poured us coffee. "Having a solid work life will probably make your relationships at home even better?but seeing married life as an "escape route" from personal responsibility is like seeing a three-ring-circus and thinking it'd be a great place to take a nap.

Yes, Dr. Freud, my perspective most certainly goes back to my own mother.

My mom did not learn to write a check until she was in her late 30s. I remember being with her at a local store when the pharmacist behind the counter explained that he would accept a check from her written on my father?s account; I don?t think she?d even known writing a check was a possibility.

Like many other women of her generation, she was given a certain amount of cash every week as a household allowance and it was assumed that all expenses would be paid from that small, small fund.

Anything ?extra? had to be asked for specially. I remember eavesdropping guiltily when the ?extra? item was something I wanted: a new doll, a new dress, or money for the movies. My mother would do my pleading for me when I was a kid, and she and I waited, like members of some guerrilla force, to ambush my father when he was ?in a good mood.?

My mother would instruct me to help prepare his favorite meal and be cheerful until he was sufficiently relaxed.

Then we pounced, giving all the good reasons for this unplanned expenditure.

Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn?t: I grieved for months after being denied a pair of white go-go boots in fourth grade, which had seemed crucial to my emotional well-being. I won?t say that I felt like Scarlett O?Hara lifting her fist to the sky and swearing, ?With God as my witness?I shall never be hungry again!? but I promised myself that when I grew up, I wouldn?t have to play tricks to get them to buy me what I wanted.

My father worked hard?12 hours a day, six days a week, sewing bedspreads and curtains with his brothers at the family shop?and money was always more than tight. It had a stranglehold on us.

Neither of my parents, however, thought my mother should work. She was conflicted in the lessons she taught me, her youngest child and only daughter. I heard that I, too, should be a ?feminine? woman who wasn?t out there scrambling in the rat race, tough and wise-cracking with the men. But I also knew that she wished there had been a way for her talents and intelligence to be recognized, and for her to have more economic independence than her life allowed her.

But since she?d left school in Quebec in the eighth grade and English was her second language, it wasn?t as if she would be able to get an interesting job, or one that used her intelligence and her talents. Cleaning other people?s houses wasn?t going to be any more fun than cleaning our own.

I was scared by my mother?s life. I never wanted to have to ask anybody to foot the bill for my rent, my food, my clothes, or my education. I put myself through college and graduate school, got scholarships but still racked up huge loans which I paid off only after I started writing?and selling?books. I wrote "trade" books for a popular audience as I did academic work that would permit me to be awarded tenure as a professor.?

I worked, it worked, and I've kept on working.?

Yes, I embrace and respect work for the psychological and emotional securities it provides; at times, these can overshadow the very paycheck. And I worry about women who've convinced themselves that, by marrying for money, they?re not going to be "working" for a living. It can be more of a burden to please a partner with whom you live than satisfy a boss for whom you work.?

There's nothing about "taking it easy" to make life more interesting, more fun, or more challenging?and if we don't want to be fascinated, thrilled, or inspired every day, then it's not worth the bother.

Life can be great. It really is like the circus: it's a place to be delighted but not a place where you'll relax?which means that, if you're doing it right, it's rarely easy.

Want some taste with that ice cream?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nonfat cheese that tastes like plastic. Low-calorie soda that leaves a bitter aftertaste. Sugar-free brownies that crumble like Styrofoam.

Dieters have learned an important lesson: When you take the fat and calories out of your favorite treats, you sometimes have to say goodbye to the taste too.

But snack brands like Dreyer's/Edy's ice cream, Hershey's chocolate and Lay's potato chips are trying to solve this age-old dieter's dilemma by rolling out so-mid-calorie goodies that have more fat and calories than the snacks of earlier diet crazes but less than the original versions. They're following the lead of soda companies like Pepsi and Dr Pepper that introduced mid-calorie drinks last year.

It's hard to isolate sales of mid-calorie snacks since they also usually have reduced fat, or other healthy attributes like reduced sodium. But sales of all foods and drinks in which the amount of things like fat, sugar, salt, carbohydrates have been actively reduced during production have risen 16 percent to $51.72 billion since 2006, according to research firm Euromonitor International.

The mid-calorie trend is hitting at a time when companies that make sugary and salty treats are being blamed for the country's expanding waistlines. The problem is that the same things that make snacks taste good ? sugar, salt, calories ? also make them fattening. And many Americans don't want to sacrifice taste at snack time. Shaving a few calories enables companies to market their cakes, cookies and chips as healthier without the bad taste stigma associated with some low-fat products.

It's just the kind of marketing that might attract Monica Olivas. She says she wants to lead a healthy lifestyle, including curbing her fat and caloric intake as much as possible, but most low-fat foods just don't appeal to her.

"Sometimes companies go too far and take out all the fat ? and all the flavor," says Olivas, a 29-year-old recruiter from Pico Rivera, Calif.

A NEW 'LIGHT'

The mid-calorie trend is a toned-down version of the "light" craze that started in the 1990s. Back then, "low fat" or "no fat" was all the rage. But the products often fizzled.

For instance, McDonald's rolled out the McLean Deluxe, a low-fat burger, in 1991. But the burger, which was in part made with seaweed, had dismal sales. It disappeared from restaurants within five years.

Similarly, Lay's in 1998 introduced Wow fat-free potato chips that use fat substitute Olestra. But the ick factor trumped healthiness when the Food and Drug Administration said the chips had to come with a warning that Olestra may cause abdominal cramping, loose stools, and that it inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients.

The FDA dropped the requirement for the label in 2004 after studying the matter. The chips were renamed "Light," but sales have not recovered.

"Originally, a lot of the diet stuff just wasn't good," says Richard George, chair of the department of food marketing at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. "People would say you could throw away contents and eat the box. But they've gotten better."

The new era of diet food started in the last decade. In 2007, companies began offering 100-calorie packs of popular snacks like Oreos cookies and Twinkies cakes. That's when brands started putting their focus on reducing calories ? without any flavor change.

Turns out, there's some science behind all this calorie slashing. Nutritionists say it's not necessary to cut out all the "junk" foods in your cupboard or to take all the fat or calories out of them.

Reducing a nominal number of calories in your diet each day ? even from that morning coffee run or afternoon visit to the vending machine for chips ? is an effective way to battle obesity, says David Levitsky, professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University.

He says "if you typically have a 200-calorie cookie and you have a 160-calorie cookie instead" it won't make you hungrier at the next meal. And since obesity can be caused by as few as 20 excess calories a day, Levitsky says cutting a few at each meal makes a big difference.

But in order for that to work you have to eat the snacks in moderation. It becomes a problem when people overestimate how much more they can eat of nonfat ice cream or low-calorie chips, says Kelly Brownell, a nutritionist at Yale University.

"If consumption of ice cream and potato chips does not increase and people eat somewhat better versions, the outcome will be good," Brownell says.

TASTE IS KEY

First, companies have to convince dieters that their mid-calorie snacks are not only healthy, but tasty too.

Flavor is a key when Betty Kranzdorf, 55, considers eating foods with lower calories. She says she avoids reduced-calorie English muffins ("horrible texture and taste") but she'll pick up reduced-fat Pringles chips because she can't tell the difference between those and the originals.

"I won't buy 'low cal' just because it's 'low-cal,'" says Kranzdorf, a paralegal from New

York. "If the food I'm eating isn't satisfying, then I'll just go eat something that is more to my liking later ? which defeats the whole purpose."

With that in mind, Hershey's in June introduced Simple Pleasures, chocolate with 30 percent less fat. A serving size of six pieces equals 180 calories and 8 grams of fat ? that's 30 calories and 5 grams of fat less than the original Hershey's chocolate bar. The company is hoping the deficit is enough to lure chocolate lovers who want to eat healthier.

Hershey's developed the product after consumer research revealed that the No. 1 barrier for people to buy chocolate is the "perceived negative health benefits," says spokeswoman Anna Lingeris.

"We're hearing more and more that customers want healthier options as a balanced lifestyle becomes a more prevalent way of living," Lingeris says.

Similarly, Lay's in July rolled out two new flavors of its Kettle Cooked potato chips with 40 percent less fat. The brand, which fries chips in small batches so as to use less oil than the continuous frying process for regular chips, introduced "Smokehouse BBQ" and "Cooked Sun-Dried Tomato and Parmesan."

The company says it was able to lower the calories and fat without sacrificing taste: Regular Kettle Cooked chips have 160 calories and 9 grams of fat, while the reduced-fat versions have 130 calories and 6 grams of fat.

"The strategy behind mid-calorie offerings is finding the happy space between zero fat and regular products," says Tony Matta, vice president of marketing for Frito Lay, which makes Lay's chip brands.

But sometimes finding the right balance isn't enough ? marketing can be key. Dreyer's/Edy's (it's called Dreyer's on the West Coast and Edy's on the East) learned that the hard way.

The company in May rolled out an ad campaign that emphasizes that Slow Churned ice cream is half the fat and one third of the calories of regular ice cream ? but the company avoids using the word "light."

Why? Because when Dreyer's/Edy's began selling Slow Churned ice cream in 2004, the company labeled the product "light." But ice cream buyers didn't take to the word, and the company stopped advertising the brand using it. In fact, the company eventually stopped advertising the product altogether after 2007, although it still sold it in stores.

"'Light' used to be a word that consumers had a lot of negative perception ... because of the taste experience," Eiseman says. "For ice cream, taste is king, first and foremost ... they'd rather have great taste and half the fat, rather than OK taste and no fat."

The new packaging and ad campaign for the product, which has about 120 calories and 4.5 grams of fat compared with 150 calories and 8 grams of fat in regular Dreyer's mint chocolate chip, has the tagline "1/2 the Fat, 1/3 Fewer Calories than Regular Ice cream." (The company acknowledges that 4.5 grams of fat is not quite "half" of 8 grams of fat, but Dreyer's/Edy's brand manager Jen Eiseman says the marketing campaign took a the liberty of rounding in order to focus on the healthier aspects of the slow-churn ice cream.

"There's been a shift culturally from extreme dieting ... and giving up food altogether," Eiseman says. "Now it's not about giving things up, but finding healthier ways of having it all."

Water as a Weight Loss Weapon

People go to great lengths to lose weight, making extensive exercise plans and eating health foods only. But a very simple solution for weight loss is much easier than we think; drinking water. After a lot of research and debate, it is eventually proved that water can be a beneficial addition to any weight loss program. Simply drinking more water can help you control your weight but incorporating it with your other diet plans can make you lose pounds much faster.

Water works as an excellent appetite suppressant. Drinking two 8-ounce glasses of water before any meal curbs your appetite at meal time. Drinking more water throughout the day makes you feel less hungry for snacks and help you in preventing excessive intake of sweetened snack. Drinking water before a meal time can also reduce your calorie intake. It is observed that people who drink water right before their mealtimes consume 75 to 90 less calories on average.

People who drink more water may experience a change in their dietary habits. Drinking more water leads to eating more vegetables and fruits. Also, drinking more water can help you in giving up the intake of sweetened beverages by quenching your thirst and fulfilling your liquid intake needs.

Drinking ice-cold water can make your body temperature go down. In order to get your body temperature back to normal, your body burns more calories. Cold water that makes you shiver makes your muscles contract and burn calories faster. Drinking more water can increase your metabolism to some extent. This makes you feel less hungry and help you lose your weight.

Recent studies have also shown that the weight loss due to water is a long lasting one.

Hence, drinking more water can not only help you shed pounds faster, but also help you in keeping your body in shape for a long time. Water also prevents us from dehydration that can result due to our exercise programs.

Apart from drinking water, you can also increase your water intake by eating vegetable and foods that have large quantities of water like cucumbers, tomatoes, soups and salads. While drinking water can quench your thirst, our body processes hunger and thirst differently. By incorporating more water-containing foods to your diet, you can notch up your weight loss plan a level higher.

So while you are trying everything you can to lose weight and tone down your body, here is a simple tip; drink more water. You can definitely lose weight faster while staying away from any side-effects. And since water is calorie-free, there are no risks involved.

Business Economics and the Digital Coupon | MyDealCompass ...

The adoption of smartphone growth is rapidly changing the retail shopping experience for both shoppers and businesses. Shoppers armed with their trusty smartphones continually want instant access to pricing information and special offers via their hand-held devices. A huge factor of this mega-trend is the use of digital coupons. This trend is further driven by group-buying, acceptance among the young and ease of redemption. Recessionary economics plays a role but the use of electronic coupons appears to be here to stay, regardless of the economic climate.

Those businesses who do not jump on board and join the digital coupon trend are risking a loss of business. Many businesses are hesitating to incorporate a large digital coupon plan into their marketing strategy because as the economic conditions improve they think shoppers will discontinue their reliance of retail coupons and savings codes. However, it is a fact that the couponing trend has continued to grow, even as the economy improves. Many shoppers now base their shopping activities where they can receive the best savings and discounts.

Also, the cost of advertising digital coupon deals online can be extensive with some of the coupon sites that are available. However, with myDealCompass, businesses can advertise their savings and discounts for a low monthly fee with no additional charges. Once their deal is live they can also tweek and change the savings as they see fit. This is an advantage that is not offered on other digital discount sites. As a result, there is a definite business advantage to join the digital coupon trend and give shoppers the instant access to deals that they search for.

Best constraint on mass of photons, using observations of super-massive black holes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A global team of scientists, including a University of Mississippi physicist, has determined the best constraint on the mass of photons so far, using observations of super-massive black holes.

The research findings appear in the September issue of Physical Review Letters. "Black hole bombs and photon mass bounds" is co-authored by Emanuele Berti, UM assistant professor of physics and astronomy, along with fellow researchers Paolo Pani, Vitor Cardoso, Leonardo Gualtieri and Akihiro Ishibashi.

This paper details how the scientists, who work in Portugal, Italy, Japan and the U.S., found a way to use astrophysical observations to test a fundamental aspect of the Standard Model -- namely, that photons have no mass -- better than anyone before.

"The test works like this: if photons had a mass, they would trigger an instability that would spin down all black holes in the universe," Berti said. "But astronomers tell us that the gigantic, super-massive black holes at galactic centers are spinning, so this instability cannot be too strong.

"The mass of the photon, if it has a mass at all, must be extremely tiny."

"Ultralight photons with nonzero mass would produce a 'black hole bomb': a strong instability that would extract energy from the black hole very quickly," said Pani, the paper's lead author. "The very existence of such particles is constrained by the observation of spinning black holes. With this technique, we have succeeded in constraining the mass of the photon to unprecedented levels: the mass must be one hundred billion of billions times smaller than the present constraint on the neutrino mass, which is about two electron-volts."

The results of this study can be used to investigate the existence of new particles, such as those possibly contributing to the dark matter that is the subject of a search using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva. CERN is the site where the breakthrough discovery of the Higgs boson was reported earlier this year.

"That discovery filled one of the most important gaps in our understanding of the standard model of particle physics, because it explains how particles get their mass," Gualtieri said. "However, not all particles have mass. Physics makes progress by testing every nook and cranny of our commonly accepted theories. So, if we believe that a particle has no mass, we'd better test this idea with precise experiments.

"Observations of super-massive black holes may provide new insights which are not accessible in laboratory experiments. This would certainly be exciting. Perhaps these new frontiers in astrophysics will give us a clearer understanding of the microscopic universe."

"Paolo, Vitor, Leonardo and I are all part of an IRSES Network on 'Numerical Relativity and High-Energy Physics' funded by the European Union," Berti said. "Paolo presented a talk on this work at the first meeting of our network that was held in Aveiro, Portugal in July. This network will be used in the next four years to strengthen our collaboration even further."

Pani, who received the Fubini Prize from the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics for the best Ph.D. thesis nationwide in 2011, is a post-doctoral researcher at Instituto Superior T?cnico in Lisbon, Portugal, supported by a European Marie Curie Fellowship.

"Paolo started working with us when he visited Ole Miss in 2007," Berti said. "We have been working together on this particular project since January 2012, and we have co-authored nine papers so far."

A post-doctorate researcher at UM before returning to his native Portugal, Cardoso is a professor at Instituto Superior Tecnico, where his group is supported by a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant. Cardoso and Berti have published 37 papers together over the past decade.

"Gualtieri and I were both Ph.D. students under the supervision of Valeria Ferrari in Rome, Italy," Berti said. "We have also been collaborating for more than a decade. Leonardo is now a research professor ('ricercatore') in Rome."

Ishibashi works at the KEK Theory Center and at the Department of Physics of Kinki University in Japan, where physicists at the center are studying in great depth phenomena similar to the one described in the PRL paper.

This study was funded, in part, by National Science Foundation Grant No. PHY-0900735 and by CAREER Grant No. PHY-1055103.

Sulfur Hexafluoride For Electrical Applications - Work On the Internet

Sulfur hexafluoride is a colourless, odourless gas having a much higher dielectric strength than air or nitrogen. The SF6 is often used as Dielectric medium in gas insulated switchgears, HV circuit breakers and other electrical equipment.

Sulfur hexafluoride is a very potent greenhuse gas, (22800 times more than CO2). That???s why this gas is under the F-Gas directive in Europe. SF6 can???t be released to the atmosphere.

The arcing or corona in SF6 breakers can degenerate the gas into corrosive or toxic compounds, such as S2F10, or SO2. It is advisable for electric maintenance companies to monitor the gas composition and quality by means of an SF6 Analyzer.

MySpace is ready for a big comeback, says Justin Timberlake

MySpace was huge. The social network had millions of users before Facebook shoved it aside. But now, Justin Timberlake and two investors have announced big plans for a rebuilt MySpace.

A "new MySpace" waits just around the corner, says Justin Timberlake, who purchased the once-massive social network with two investors.

When media titan News Corp. first purchased MySpace in July, 2005, for $580 million, the thought of selling it just six years later for $35 million was unthinkable. But it happened. Now, a year later, plans for MySpace's next evolution are finally revealed.

Over the last three years, MySpace lost hundreds of millions in revenue and went through extensive layoffs, cutting over half their employees. Currently the MySpace audience is only?54 million.?Compared to Facebook's nearly 1 billion members,?many consider MySpace to be extinct.

On June 30, News Corp. sold?MySpace to singer-turned-actor Justin Timberlake and Chris and Tim Vanderhook. Their plan is to completely rebuild the site from scratch.

The redesigned MySpace now puts music at its center. It's a place for artists to connect with their fans.

?In a single sentence, it?s a social network for the creative community to connect to their fans,? Tim Vanderhook told The Hollywood Reporter. ?We?re going after artists, right after this we?ll be talking to various artists to come on the platform. We want to give them a chance to help build it with us. We?re really far along, but we really want that last twenty percent to really be crafted by more people like Justin that actually know the tools and things that they need.?

The Hollywood Reporter also notes that Timberlake?s role is obvious when it comes to promoting and recruiting, however, he won?t reveal who will be his first targets. Eventually, the site will reach out to undiscovered talent and their fans.

?So it?s not about just the established, it?s also about the unsigned,? Chris Vanderhook said in The Hollywood Reporter article.

A new feature will allow fans to be profiled on their favorite artists? page. In other words, Timberlake admirers may one day see their picture on his page with the caption ?#1 fan.? The new co-owners believe that this method of connecting fans and artists will be a big attention-grabber for potential users.

Recently, Timberlake posted a teaser video on Twitter?revealing the new MySpace. According to MTV News, the interface looks ?a bit like Facebook-meets-Instagram, with hints of Pinterest and Windows 8.?

Among other things, users can peruse not only their friends? photos, but playlists as well. The new ?trending? tab shows everything from schedules of bands performing on late-night shows to magazine profiles of artists. For easy sharing and connecting, the new design features a drag-and-drop method.

However, even with all the new attractive bells and whistles, MySpace will still have to compete with the social network that wounded MySpace in the first place: Facebook.

RIM: BlackBerry 10 carrier testing starts in October, OS remains on schedule

RIM BlackBerry 10 carrier testing starts in October, the OS itself is on track

Worried that RIM might face any further delays of BlackBerry 10? Don't be. CEO Thorsten Heins just confirmed at his BlackBerry Jam presentation that carrier testing for the new OS should begin this October, and that the platform launch is still slated for early 2013, as we were told this spring. As he's mentioned in the past, Heins believes carriers are "excited" about the BlackBerry update, implying that this is what's driving the certification process months in advance. Whether or not optimism is alive and well among providers, the news could be a relief for carriers and BlackBerry developers alike, either of which is likely keen to minimize the shift towards an Android-and-iPhone duopoly in the smartphone space.

NBC's sampling strategy pays dividends

(AP) ? A jump on the fall television season enabled NBC to get some of its new series sampled.

The premiere episode of "Revolution," a J.J. Abrams thriller about a world with the power grid shut down, reached 11.7 million viewers last week and finished among the Nielsen Co.'s top 10. NBC had aired highlights of the pilot episode during the Olympics and the full episode last Monday, a week before the official season opening.

An episode of "Go On," the Matthew Perry comedy that has been aggressively promoted, finished among last week's top 15 shows, according to Nielsen, which measures media consumption.

The fast starts by no means guarantee success. But as the fourth-place network, NBC needed to find a way to get viewers to at least try their new shows before an avalanche of programming starts for ABC, CBS and Fox.

"The Voice" has also been doing well in its return, with both of its episodes last week topping 13.5 million viewers. By contrast, Fox's "The X-Factor" was seen by 10.1 million and 9.5 million in its two episodes.

Not everything worked for NBC. The network opened its Thursday schedule a week early, starting with a special "Saturday Night Live" election edition, and couldn't stem the erosion of viewers on a night NBC once ruled.

NBC averaged 8.4 million viewers for the week (5.3 rating, 9 share). CBS was second with 7.9 million (5.1, 8), ABC had 6 million (3.9, 7), Fox had 5.2 million (3.1, 5), ION Television had 1 million (0.7, 1) and the CW had 770,000 (0.5, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with a prime-time average of 3.5 million viewers (1.9, 3), Telemundo had 1.2 million (0.7, 1), TeleFutura had 590,000 (0.3, 1), Estrella had 210,000 and Azteca 110,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.8 million viewers (5.4, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 7.3 million (5, 10) and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.8 million viewers (4, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Sept. 17-23, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: NFL Football: New England at Baltimore, NBC, 21.27 million; "Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kick," NBC, 14.67 million; "The Voice" (Tuesday), NBC, 13.6 million; "The Voice" (Monday), NBC, 13.57 million; "Primetime Emmy Awards," ABC, 13.26 million; "60 Minutes," CBS, 12.64 million; "Revolution," NBC, 11.65 million; "Survivor: Philippines," CBS, 11.37 million; "NCIS," CBS, 10.25 million; "The X-Factor" (Thursday), Fox, 10.15 million.

Union asks NFL owners to end officials lockout

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL players' union sent an open letter to team owners calling for an end to the lockout of on-field officials and hinting that it's a violation of the contract between the players and the league.

The players were locked out for 4? months last year, and they emphasized in the letter, posted Sunday on the union's website, that a lack of a safe working environment exists with replacement officials working the games.

Domonique Foxworth, president of the NFL Players Association, Drew Brees and Scott Fujita are among the union members who signed it.

"Your decision to lock out officials with more than 1,500 years of collective NFL experience has led to a deterioration of order, safety and integrity," the NFL Players Association wrote. "This affirmative decision has not only resulted in poor calls, missed calls and bad game management, but the combination of those deficiencies will only continue to jeopardize player health and safety and the integrity of the game that has taken decades to build."

The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the letter signed by 12 current or former players, the players also ask why Commissioner Roger Goodell issues suspensions and fines "in the name of player health and safety" while the regular officials the league entrusts to maintain health and safety are locked out.

"As players, we see this game as more than the 'product' you reference at times," the letter said. "You cannot simply switch to a group of cheaper officials and fulfill your legal, moral, and duty obligations to us and our fans. You need to end the lockout and bring back the officials immediately."

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contact expired. It has used replacements for the first time since 2001, when the regular officials missed only the first week of action.

But those replacements had experience at the highest levels of college football, and the current replacements come from lower college levels or from other leagues such as Arena Football.

There have been numerous complaints by players and coaches about the officiating ? certainly more than when the regular officials work ? and one particularly embarrassing episode in which an official was removed from working a New Orleans game because he posted photos of himself in Saints gear on Facebook.

"The removal of the veteran officials from regular-season games left a group of your replacements who have proved to be incapable of keeping pace with the speed of the game," the players wrote. "Coaches and players have complained of numerous errors and failures including: erratic and missed calls on egregious holds and hits, increased skirmishes between players and confusion about game rules. Many replacements have lost control of games due to inexperience and unfamiliarity with players and rules."

Browns linebacker Fujita was suspended for three games by Goodell for his role in the Saints' bounties scandal, a suspension that was temporarily placed on hold by an appeals panel.

Among others signing the letter were Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, Packers center Jeff Saturday and former star safety Brian Dawkins, now retired.

Singer Fiona Apple addressed her recent drug arrest in a rambling speech during a show in Houston, Texas on Friday.

The Criminal hitmaker was arrested on Wednesday on a drug possession charge and was subsequently released on $10,000 US bail after spending the night in Hudspeth County Jail.

She postponed a gig on Thursday? at the Moody Theater in Austin, but took to the stage on Friday at Houston's Bayou Music Center, where she stunned fans by taking time out from performing to blast several staff at the jail where she was incarcerated.

She told the audience, "There are four of you out there, and I want you to know that I heard everything you did, I wrote it all down with your names and everything you did and said, stupidly thinking that I couldn't hear or see you. I then ripped the paper up, but not before I encoded it."

Apple added she was sorry to "the guy who runs the jail," who she branded "a real decent guy," for "being attitude-y and saying that I didn't trust him. Because I didn't then but by the end of the day I did."

Will Gay Marriage Be Legal In Your Market This Year?

?

This post was written by Kathryn Hamm, President of GayWeddings.com, you can follow her on Twitter @gayweddingscom. GayWeddings.com is the leading online boutique and resource dedicated to serving same-sex couples since 1999 and a partner in the WeddingWire Network.

?

I?ve talked in the past about the evolving legal landscape for partnership recognition for same-sex couples and how Wedding Pros should make some conscious decisions about their marketing materials and the audience to whom they wish to speak, if they haven?t already done so.

Specifically, I?ve spoken to vendors in the jurisdictions where gay marriage is now legal (Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, & Washington, DC) and to those Pros where civil unions are recognized (Delaware, Rhode Island, Illinois, & Hawaii).

Today, I invite Wedding Pros based in California, Washington, Maine, Maryland and Minnesota to listen closely (but welcome all Pros to eavesdrop on our conversation!). There are several legal thresholds waiting to be crossed this fall and the outcomes may impact your business. It also bears mentioning that, in 4 of these 5 states, your actions can also have an impact the outcomes.

CALIFORNIA.? From a market perspective, we may see the biggest shift in the state of California, which legalized marriage briefly in 2008, before a ballot measure, Proposition 8,? invalidated same-sex marriage. The 18,000 couples who did get legally married in that brief window continue to enjoy equal partnership recognition, but same-sex couples have not been able to legally marry in California since Proposition 8 was enacted.

The nationally recognized court case challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8, Hollingsworth v. Perry (commonly known as ?Prop 8?), has wound its way through the State Supreme Court of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and now awaits its fate on the steps of the United States Supreme Court. Though early analysis suggested that a victory in the Supreme Court could mean gay marriage recognition across the U.S., the current narrow interpretation of the case, as established through the Appeals process, means that the outcome is relevant only to the state of California.

On September 25, the Supreme Court will announce the list of cases it plans to hear in 2012-2013. If Hollingsworth v. Perry is accepted (or ?granted cert?) by the Court, the fate of Prop 8 won?t be known until the spring of 2013. If, however, on October 1, the Supreme Court includes Hollingsworth v. Perry on the list of cases it will not hear this session, then Proposition 8 would be found to be unconstitutional and marriage would once again be available to gay and lesbian couples in California. And, experts suggest that marriage equality would be reinstated in California within a few days? time.

So, Pros, take note: California is a large market and can move the needle as significantly as New York did in 2011. ?If the Supreme Court doesn?t accept the case and gay marriage becomes legal again in early October 2012, will you be ready?

MINNESOTA. In Minnesota, the state legislature voted in 2011 to add a ballot measure which would amend its constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage is not currently recognized in Minnesota, but even so, this constitutional amendment would be a significant set-back for same-sex couples. Regardless of the result, same-sex couples will continue to have wedding ceremonies (even without the legal recognition), but will likely make choices to marry legally elsewhere and consider living in jurisdictions where partnership recognition is possible. In the spirit of ?live & let live,? Wedding Pros and other allies who do not agree with this constitutional ban can vote ?No? in November and have an impact on the outcome.

MAINE, MARYLAND & WASHINGTON STATE. If enacting marriage equality in New York in 2011 offered a game-changing boost of momentum for advocates of marriage equality, then surely the ballot initiatives pending in Maine, Maryland & Washington this November are the measures by which we?ll understand just how much the attitudes of voters in America have changed.

Unlike the ballot measure in Minnesota, the question at hand is whether or not voters will choose to support marriage equality. The state legislatures in both Maryland and Washington have already legalized marriage equality; it is now up to the voters to uphold the laws as passed by their representatives. In Maine, voters can make history by being the first state to proactively enact marriage equality at the ballot box (rather than via the courts or state lawmakers).

The enactment of marriage equality in any one of these states ? let alone all three ? will allow thousands of same-sex couples to marry and will also signify an important shift in popular opinion, setting the stage for states like Illinois, Rhode Island, Hawaii and Delaware to consider upgrading their civil unions to civil marriage. ?Wedding Pros can choose to play a role in this outcome with the lever they pull on Election Day, and should otherwise take steps to re-evaluate their marketing materials and outreach in the event that marriage does become legal this fall in accordance with the wishes of voters.

For more on recent developments in the legal landscape, please visit HRC?s Infographic, 2012: The Year of Marriage, and its Marriage Center. For more information on the equally significant ?DOMA? cases, which have the potential to impact the recognition of marriage equality at the federal level and are pending review in the Supreme Court this session, please read the Season Preview: Lesbian & Gay Rights at the Supreme Court.
